DR. H.A. SCHULZ INVITATIONAL

While no one was going to catch Edgar’s teams Monday in the Wildcats’ Dr. H.A. Schulz Invitational, the Rib Lake boys put together a solid outing to place third out of seven teams, while the Gilman girls won five events in their fifthplace team finish.

Gilman’s Lady Pirates got their usual wins from Bailey Angell in the shot put and discus and Gracie Tallier in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and freshman Claire Drier picked up the fifth in the 300-meter low hurdles. Rib Lake finished sixth in the team standings and ended the meet with a win in the 1,600-meter relay.

Angell was pushed in her second straight meet in the discus competition by Flambeau’s Anna Crick. Angell’s best throw was her last in the finals and it carried 106 feet, 4 inches to push her past Crick’s top effort of 103-3. That followed Angell’s personal-best throw of 39-8 in the shot put that won the competition by 5 feet, 7 inches over Edgar’s Sophia Larson. Rib Lake’s Lauren Pelnis was fifth with a throw of 30-9.5 that was an inch off her personal-best toss from three days earlier and her teammate, Hannah Schuh was 10th at 26-6.

Schuh set a new personal-best distance in the discus, earning the eighthplace point at 80 feet even. Gilman’s Emma Grunseth also set a new record for herself with a pretty throw of 84-7 in the finals. She also placed 12th in the shot put at 24-9.

Tallier handily won the 100-meter dash in 12.93 seconds, 0.24 seconds ahead of Edgar’s Morgan Schelle, who was named the meet’s Most Valuable Athlete on the girls’ side. Tallier later pulled away from Schnelle by a 0.27-second margin and won the 200-meter dash in 26.3 seconds.

Claire Drier was fourth for Gilman in the 100 at 13.95 seconds, while older sister Ellie Drier was 11th in 15.41 seconds. Ellie was 0.31 seconds away from scoring in the 200, taking 10th in 32.05 seconds. Claire’s victory in the low hurdles came with a new personal-best time of 51.32 seconds, 0.35 seconds ahead of Abbotsford’s Sydney Falteisek.

Megan Yanko, Pelnis, Kylee Goodrich and Amber Yanko teamed up to give Rib Lake its 1,600-meter relay win in 4:41.95, a 5.05-second improvement from the Rib Lake Quad three days earlier. They beat Edgar Monday by 4.09 seconds. The Yankos, Pelnis and Olivia Lopez were third in the 400-meter relay at 54.52 seconds, while Gilman’s team of the Driers, Grunseth and Tallier was fourth in 55.52 seconds. Edgar won in 53.78 seconds, just ahead of Wisconsin Rapids Assumption (54.23). The Yankos, Pelnis and Lopez also took fourth in the 800-meter relay at 1:58.85. Assumption won in 1:55.37.

Goodrich and Lopez placed twice individually for Rib Lake. Lopez took third in the triple jump at 30-8.25, less than a foot behind winner Brooke Imhoff of Edgar, and she was fourth in the long jump at 15-0.25, a new personal best. Schelle won that at 15-4.75, an inch ahead of Claire Drier, who was a quarter-inch ahead of third-place jumper Rachel Schneider of Edgar. Tallier was seventh at 14-4.25.

Goodrich took third in the 800-meter run at 3:00.94, while teammates Amy Espinoza (3:16.15) and Nadia Czahor (3:20.21) were seventh and ninth. Goodrich added a fourth-place time of 6:31.02 in the 1,600-meter run. Czahor was sixth in the 400-meter dash at 1:17.75, Espinoza got the eighth-place point at 1:18.77 and Sofia Fraschi was 11th at 1:31.57.

Boys results

Edgar crushed the competition with 256 points and Assumption was second with 94.

Will Hartke, Dominick Classen, Donovan Sutherland and Ryan Buehler teamed up for Rib Lake’s lone win, which came in the 3,200-meter relay. Gabe Brunner tripped when taking the baton from Zack Marion in the first exchange, but Caleb Marion and Branden Ustianowski made up ground and the Pirates finished in 52.0 seconds to just trail Edgar’s time of 51.98 seconds.

The rest of the Pirates’ scoring took place in the throws.
