The Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe Wolfpack earned a first-place, secondplace and third-place finish at Saturday’s Lakeland Conference tournament, hosted by the Luck Co-op.

Junior Braeden Person collected his first conference tournament title by winning both of his matches at 152 pounds. In a four-man bracket, Person (26-12) pinned Bruce’s Johnny Jacobs in 1:41 in the semifinal round and then earned a 5-2 decision over Shell Lake’s Brockton Naessen (22-15) in the championship.

The Luck Co-op’s Gunner Schumacher (11-12) pinned Jacobs (6-21) in the third-place match.

Person was a second-place finisher at 138 pounds as a freshman in 2020. The Lakeland Conference did not hold a tournament last winter. In his first Lakeland meet, sophomore Troy Duellman returned from injury and went 1-1 to place second in a six-man bracket at 145 pounds. The second-seeded Duellman (27-10) drew a bye into the semifinal round, where he beat a solid opponent, 32-15 Brandon Lucas of the Luck Co-op in an 8-1 decision. In the final, Duellman ran into Clear Lake’s standout sophomore Tyler Sunday (13-1), who pinned him in 5:43. Lucas wound up taking third by pinning Unity’s David Whitlock in the third-place match. Freshman Preston Fredrickson (16-10), wrestling at 126 pounds, went 2-1 for the day in a five-man bracket. As the third seed, he got a bye into the semifinals, where he was pinned by Turtle Lake-Clayton’s Mason Quade (18-10) in 2:51. Quade was pinned in 5:49 in the championship by top-seeded Mitchell Anderson (27-3) of Clear Lake.

Fredrickson buried Bruce’s Kyle Whitcome in a 22-5 technical fall in a consolation semifinal and then earned a 7-3 decision over Shell Lake’s Noah Lauterbach (12-12) in the third-place match.

The efforts of these three wrestlers resulted in 49.5 team points, good for seventh place ahead of Flambeau (21 points), who had just two wrestlers. The Luck Co-op, with a meet-high 11 wrestlers, handily won the meet with 181 points, followed by Unity (138), Shell Lake (133), Clear Lake (126.5), Turtle Lake-Clayton (109) and Bruce (54). Now it’s on to the post-season for the Wolfpack, who will compete Saturday in the WIAA Division 3 Cadott regional. The meet starts at 10 a.m. The top two wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the Feb. 19 sectional at St. Croix Falls. Cadott, who was fifth in last week’s Wisconsin Wrestling Division 3 state rankings is the overwhelming favorite to earn the team championship and a spot in Tuesday’s team sectional, also at Cadott.

Boyceville, Glenwood City, Spring Valley-Elmwood, Stanley-Boyd and Thorp/Owen-Withee also are in the regional field.
