Chiefs come up short against the Chieftains
By Ginna Young
It was an intense battle for boys basketball Jan. 14, as the Cornell Chiefs hosted the Lake Holcombe Chieftains, in a conference showdown.
Scoring was even for the first half, with the Chieftains taking a slim one-point lead into the break.
“We rattled them late in the first half and three of their starters had drawn their third foul by halftime,” said Cornell coach Steve Parker.
The second half proved a different matter, with Lake Holcombe forcing 12 turnovers from Cornell, coming up with eight more rebounds than the Chiefs. That and some longrange shooting, pushed the Chieftains ahead to claim a 63-54 victory.
“Our Cornell boys played hard but came up short,” said Parker. “Every time we made a run, it seemed Dylan Bowen (Lake Holcombe senior) answered with a three-point shot. We knew he was a good three-point shooter entering the contest and we didn’t do a good enough job containing him. Holcombe also did a nice job with their skip passes to stretch out our defense. I was also very impressed with their post-to-post passing, which fueled several of their points in the paint.”
Leading for the Chiefs, junior Dylan Bowe had a seasonhigh 29 points, knocking down two, three-pointers, to go along with 4 assists and 3 steals. Junior Avery Turany had a season-high 12 points – nine of those coming from beyond the arc) – to complement his 3 assists and 3 steals.
Sophomore Carter Harycki came up with 4 rebounds, 1 point, a block and an assist. Junior Dawson Munson had 7 rebounds, 1 point and an assist. Junior Blake Anders fell hard on his back early in the first half and re-entered the game to notch 6 rebounds, to go with his two assists.
Sophomore Bentley Spangler ended the night with two shots from long range, while freshman Blake Anders recorded 3 points and sophomore Jayden Joas-Shaw chipped in with 1 point.
On Lake Holcombe’s side, Bowen finished with 22 points, including seven shots from three-point land. Senior Sam Ewer had a season high 13 points, including a three, and senior Colton Minnick also hit double figures, finishing with 12.
The scoring was rounded out with junior Harley Schroeder adding 7, and junior Max Sauerwein, senior Nate Jones and freshman Ryley Craker, all chipping in with 2 points each. Schroeder, Ewer and Jones hit the boards, combining for 23 rebounds.
Minnick led the team with 5 assists, followed by Sauerwein, with 4, and Jones and Ewer with 3 each. Minnick also led the team with 5 steals, while Craker, Bowen and Ewer all came up with 3.
“Their pressure defense also helped pull in the victory…” said Lake Holcombe coach Joy Webster.
