Getting in some conference action before the winter break, the Lake Holcombe boys basketball team split the week’s games.

Dec. 14 vs. Winter conference (W 73-49)

To begin the week, the Chieftains headed to Winter, where Lake Holcombe led by five points at the end of the first half. It would be much different in the second half.

“We started out slow against Winter and we had trouble finishing our shots,” coach Joy Webster, “but our pressure defense prevailed and we were able to come away with a 73-49 victory.”

Seniors Colton Minnick, Nate Jones and Dylan Bowen combined for 14 steals, while Jones and senior Sam Ewer led the team with 4 steals each, followed by Minnick, Bowen and Ewer with 3.

Minnick had 29 points on the night, with Bowen right behind, with 26. Jones and junior Harley Schroeder each had 6 points, with Ewer, and freshmen Trent Lee and Ryley Craker chipping in with 2 points each.

Bowen led the team with 7 rebounds, followed by Schroeder and Ewer, with 5 each. Jones, Minnick and junior Max Sauerwein also grabbed 3 boards each.

It was then New Auburn who came to call, where scoring and defense didn’t go as planned for Lake Holcombe. The Chieftains were down 34-20 before halftime and only put up 21 points in the second half, with the game going to the Trojans, 68-41.

“We had trouble taking care of the ball tonight and had way too many turnovers to win a game,” said coach Joy Webster. “With three new starters, we are still adjusting to each other’s style of play and we will get better with experience.”

Minnick and Bowen led the team with 11 points each, while Craker followed with 8. Ewer and Schroeder each had 4, with Jones chipping in with 2 and Lee with 1.

Minnick led the team on assists, with 5, and Craker led the team with 4 steals. Jones led the team with 8 rebounds, followed by Ewer, Schroeder and and Minnick, with 4 each.

“It’s early in the season, and I am confident we will get better with playing time and experience,” said Webster.
