Athens also 2-0 this year

The Athens and Edgar varsity girls basketball teams are off to 2-0 starts to begin the 2021-22 season.

Athens started this season with a 51-20 road win against Owen-Withee on Nov. 16. The Bluejays jumped out to a dominating 31-10 halftime lead. Junior guard Celina Ellenbecker led Athens with 11 points and sophomore Addison Lavicka added 10.

Sophomore Jazelle Hartwig paced the Bluejays with 10 rebounds and sophomore Sophia Coker had seven. Hartwig and Sophia Coker led the team with two blocks each. Sophia Coker paced Athens with five steals and junior Elizabeth Van Rixel added three. Van Rixel led the team with three assists in the victory.

Athens then easily beat Prentice, 5734, on Thursday at home. Lavicka led the Bluejays with 14 points while Ellenbecker added 12 and Sophia Coker had eight. Sophia Coker paced the team with five rebounds and Van Rixel had four. Hartwig and Van Rixel led Athens with five assists each, while Hartwig and Sophia Coker paced the team with five steals apiece.

‘Cats off to fast start

Edgar began this season with a 45-22 home win against Gilman on Nov. 16. The Wildcats built a 22-10 halftime advantage against the Pirates. No Edgar player obtained double-digit scoring but junior Reagan Borchardt led the team with eight points and senior Malia Hoesly added seven.

The Edgar Wildcats then thumped the Wausau Newman Cardinals. 53-18, on the road Thursday. Individual player statistics were not available.

Marathon’s varsity girls basketball team has a 1-1 record thus far this season. Marathon upended Loyal, 54-36, at home on Nov. 16. The Red Raiders jumped out to a 23-13 halftime advantage against the Greyhounds.

Senior guard Allison Wokatsch led Marathon with 22 points. Senior Jenna Aschbrenner and junior Ashley Phakitthong and Kali Prihoda led the Red Raiders with three steals each.

Marathon then fell, 55-50, to Auburndale in a road game on Thursday. Kali Prihoda led the Red Raiders with 13 points and Wokatsch added 11. Jada Prihoda paced the Red Raiders with 10 rebounds, while Kali Prihoda led the team with six steals.

Tigers lose opener

Stratford’s varsity girls basketball squad lost, 52-32, to Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Thursday at home. Junior Lauren Kraus led the Tigers with 15 rebounds.

Kraus and sophomore Sailor Kauffman paced the team with two steals apiece. Junior Tessa Berg led Stratford with eight points and Kauffman added six. Junior Ella Heidmann paced the squad with two assists.

Stratford’s game result and individual player statistics against Auburndale on Tueday will appear in next week’s newspaper.
