Marathon’s varsity volleyball team downed all three of its Marawood Conference opponents at the crossover on Saturday in Abbotsford.

Senior Vanessa Krueger led the Red Raiders with 13 attack kills in the team’s 2-1 match win against Abbotsford, while sophomore Ava Krueger had 11 kills. The sisters swapped places in leading the team in kills during a 2-1 match victory against Athens, in which Ava Krueger paced Marathon with 13 kills and Vanessa Krueger had 11.

Marathon senior Alyssa Hall led the team with two serve aces against Athens, while Ava Krueger paced the squad with two block assists.

Athens won a close first set, 25-23, before Marathon rallied to win the second set, 25-17, and the deciding third set, 15-9.

Bluejays sophomore Jazelle Hartwig led the team with 10 kills. Sophomore Sophia Coker paced Athens with two solo blocks and junior Savannah Epping had a pair of aces. Epping also led the Bluejays with 16 digs and sophomore Addison Lavicka had 12 assists against Marathon.

Marathon also defeated Chequamegon, 2-0. The Red Raiders have an 18-4 match record this season following the conference crossover in Abbotsford.

Athens swept both Auburndale and Stratford 2-0 in its matches. Athens won a close first set, 25-23, against Stratford before winning by a larger margin in the second set, 25-14.

Freshman Danica Diethelm led Athens with two aces and Lavicka had 10 kills against Stratford.

Athens player Sydney Coker said her team’s match victory against Stratford was a little sweeter, considering her father, Bill Coker, is a longtime chemistry teacher at Stratford High School and she is good friends with many of Stratford’s volleyball players.

“It feels really good to beat Stratford because me and my teammates came together and really pulled through for each other,” she said.

Athens has an 18-9 match record this season after the conference crossover in Abbotsford, while Stratford has a 14-20 match record.
