American Legion season in full swing

Marathon baseball players only took one day off to rest between their spring high school and summer American Legion Post 469 seasons.

Post 469 dropped a doubleheader against the Marshfield Junior Legion, 9-7 and 6-0, on July 1. Kyle Hollenbeck was the losing pitcher in Post 469’s 9-7 defeat. Jake Sweno batted two for three in the game. Tyler Underwood smacked a double, while he and Brock Warren collected a pair of RBIs each. Casey Hollenbeck suffered the pitching loss in the second game.

Marathon bounced back to win a doubleheader against Tomahawk, 10-0 and 4-0, on July 2. Jaden Koeller struck out eight hitters in leading Post 469 to the 10-0 victory. Daniel La Qua had two RBIs. La Qua then pitched in the 4-0 win.

Post 469 split a doubleheader against the D.C. Everest Legion squad on July 5. Brock Warren struck out 10 batters in leading Marathon to a 11-1 win in the first game. Grant Warren hit four for four in the game, while Pierson Hamann had two RBIs. Brock Warren, Mike Hahn and Nathan Hanke all doubled in the victory. Underwood batted three for four in the win. Underwood was the losing pitcher in Marathon’s 8-4 loss in the second game. Grant Warren had two RBIs.

Marathon also split a doubleheader against Wittenberg on Thursday. Koeller struck out seven batters in leading the team to a 5-2 win in the first game. Grant Warren batted two for three in the victory. Clayton Marcott was the pitcher in a 16-8 loss in the second game. Jake Lepak batted two for three with a two doubles and a pair of RBIs. Hector Pintor also collected two RBIs.

Post 469 split a doubleheader against Tomahawk on Friday. Kyle Hollenbeck was the pitcher in the team’s 8-6 win in the first game. La Qua and Grant Warren both hit two for three, while Underwood was two for two in the victory. Vesely and Pintor both hit doubles. Nathan Hanke was the pitcher in the squad’s 5-4 loss in the second game. Underwood batted two for three in the defeat, while Grant Warren collected a pair of RBIs.

Marathon swept a doubleheader against Rib Lake, 10-1 and 3-2, on Monday. Brock Warren struck out 14 batters in the team’s 10-1 win in the first game. Pintor hit two for five with three RBIs and Jake Sweno was two for five with a double. La Qua and Koeller collected two RBIs apiece. Pintor was the pitcher in the squad’s 3-2 victory in the second game. Casey Hollenbeck smacked a double in the win.

Post 469 has a 7-5 record thus far this season following Monday’s games. Post 469 plays home doubleheaders beginning at 6 p.m. this Thursday, July 15, against Nekoosa and this Friday, July 16, against Abbotsford. Post 469 concludes its regular season with a home doubleheader against Rib Lake at 6 p.m. this Monday, July 19.

The Region No. 2 Class A tournament is on Thursday, July 22, through Monday, July 26. The Class A state tournament is on Thursday, July 29 through Monday, Aug. 2.

Edgar Legion baseball

The Edgar American Legion 18U team has only played two games this summer due to the players participating in basketball and football camps, according to baseball head coach Connor Handrick. Edgar 18U does have three games remaining this summer. Edgar will play two five-inning home games against Merrill, beginning at 5 p.m., on Monday, July 19. Edgar will play a five-inning away game against Abbotsford at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20. The 18U American Legion regional will be on Friday, July 23, through Sunday, July 25, in Marathon.
