Raider teams sweep D-3 home regional meet
By Casey Krautkramer
Marathon’s boys and girls track and field teams took laps around their home track on Monday while holding the WIAA Division 3 regional championship
plaques they’d just won.
Both Red Raider squads only took third place in the track meet’s final event, the 4x400-meter relay, but it didn’t matter because they’d already won the meet. The Marathon boys amassed 160 points while Edgar finished as regional runners-up with 117. The Marathon girls tallied 143 points, better than second-place Edgar with 127.
The Edgar boys beat Marathon a week ago on Marathon’s home track to win the Marawoood South Conference championship, making Monday’s regional title victory against Edgar extra sweet for Marathon senior Jared Sweno.
“It feels really great to win the regional championship,” Sweno said. “It’s a great bounce back for us because we just missed winning the conference championship for the ninth straight year by 7-1/2 points to Edgar. It feels good for our boy and girl teams to sweep the regional, and for our boys team to get back into a groove.
“We really took losing the conference title to heart and used it as motivation to come out at regionals and do our best, and I think it’s going to carry us through the rest of this season. We’ve been determined in practice and winning the regional shows our hard work is paying off tremendously.”

“It feels good to win the 4x400-meter relay because it’s probably the best event in track, because it requires all four legs to do well so everyone put in the work to win the race,” Dahlke said while still catching his breath after the race was over. “
He’s ready for the sectional competition in Rosholt.
