Raiders hold their own in physical game at Brookfield

MEDFORD GIRLS HOCKEY

Medford’s girls hockey team took the long trip to suburban Milwaukee Friday and held up well against an eight-school co-op, falling 5-0 to the Brookfield Glacier at The Ponds of Brookfield Ice Arena.

Five different players scored goals for the Glacier, who improved to 3-6 with the win. Among their losses were a 3-0 defeat to the Wisconsin Valley Union, who beat Medford 12-0 on Dec. 10, and a 3-1 loss to Viroqua, who beat Medford 7-0 on Dec. 22.

Erin Harrigan scored the game’s first goal just 31 seconds in with an Emily Hoyt assist, but the Raiders held their own over the last 16:29 of the period, only allowing an Andrea Della Penna goal at the 14:30 mark. Cori Rudella and Bella Anzivino had the assists. The Glacier outshot Medford 18-1 in the period.

The Raiders were able to control the puck better in the second period and generated more scoring chances, but the Glacier’s Zoe Cole stopped all seven shots she faced in the period. Grace Carmen extended the home team’s lead to 3-0 with just 1:44 left in the period off assists from Anzivino and Rudella.

Bella Branz made it 4-0 at the 3:01 mark of the third period with a Julia Della Penna assist. Rudella closed the scoring with a Molly Cole assist at the 10:17 mark of the period.

Duesing finished with 52 saves, including 17 in the second period and 19 in the third. Cole stopped 12 shots to record the shutout.

Neither team had success on two power plays.

The Glacier Co-op has a roster of 18 players and is represented by schools in Brookfield, Mukwonago, Muskego, Pewaukee, Waukesha, Wauwatosa and West Allis.

Medford is back on the ice Saturday when it hosts the Houghton-Hancock U19 club team starting at 10 a.m. The Raiders are at Northland Pines Monday for a 6 p.m. face-off and at the Viroqua Co-op Jan. 21 for another 6 p.m. start.

Correction

Last week’s girls hockey story mistakenly reported the Raiders had one goal in their first six games. Actually, the team had two goals, one by Eryka Seidl in the opener against the Northern Edge and one by Kyla Kennedy Dec. 15 against Northland Pines.
