Guden breaks school’s all-time record

Edgar senior guard Makenna Guden sank a three pointer, with only 15 seconds left before halftime, to break her school’s all-time scoring record among boys and girls basketball players that’s stood for 40 years.

Guden only needed to score 13 points against Athens on Friday to eclipse former Wildcat boys basketball star Larry Brown’s all-time record of 1,275 points he set in 1981. She ended up scoring 17 points to help Edgar beat Athens, 60-43, at Athens High School.

She’s happy to set the school’s alltime scoring mark, so that now she can solely focus on helping the Wildcats attempt to win the Marawood South Conference championship and enjoy a long postseason run this season.

“It feels really good to have that last big goal of mine become a reality and see all my hard work pay off,” Guden said. “Furthermore, it feels good to represent Edgar and the basketball program with my name up there on the wall.”

Just three days earlier, Guden broke her Edgar assistant girls varsity basketball coach Holly (Denfeld) Nowak’s school girls career scoring record of 1,258 points she set in 2013. After she graduates from Edgar High School this spring, Guden plans to attend UW-Superior where she’ll major in biomedical sciences and play college basketball.

Guden led Edgar with six steals in the road victory against Athens on Friday. Wildcats sophomore Reagan Borchardt enjoyed a solid overall statistical game with 15 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Freshman Makayla Wirkus contributed eight points and five assists, while sophomore Leah Davis added six points.

Athens freshman Sophia Coker led her team with 15 points, 12 rebounds and three assists. Senior guard Kaitlyn Riehle chipped in eight points and junior McKennzie Schug had seven points and 10 rebounds for the Bluejays.

Edgar easily beat Wausau Newman, 65-26, on Monday at home. Individual player statistics were not available. The Wildcats improve their record to 8-4 overall this season, and they remain tied for first place in the Marawood South Conference.
