Janke hits game winning shot for the Athens boys

Edgar’s varsity boys basketball team improved its record to 4-0 this season after its dominating 60-20 win at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Tuesday.

Senior Kyle Brewster led the Wildcats with 18 points and senior Austin Dahlke added 12. Seniors Konnor Wolf and Drew Guden posted nine and eight points, respectively.

Guden paced Edgar with eight rebounds, six assists and two blocks while Wolf led the team with three steals.

Edgar is ranked No. 4 in this week’s Division 4 wissports.net coaches poll.

The Wildcats blitzed the Prentice Buccaneers, 77-43, on the road Friday.

Guden and Brewster led Edgar with 19 points apiece. Wolf contributed 18 points and he paced the Wildcats with seven rebounds and two blocks. Edgar’s varsity girls basketball squad, meanwhile, fell to 1-3 this season after its 51-35 loss at Loyal on Friday.

Senior Makenna Guden led the Wildcats with 21 points and six rebounds against the Greyhounds. Sophomore Reagan Borchardt added seven points and five rebounds, and she paced the team with five steals and three blocks.

‘Jay get buzzer beater win

With the Athens and Phillips’ varsity boys basketball teams tied at 49 points on Dec. 8, the Bluejays executed a perfect game-winning shot.

Athens senior Dayne Diethelm inbounded the ball to sophomore Aiden Janke, who dribbled forward and then sank a step-back corner three pointer at the buzzer to give the Bluejays a thrilling 52-49 road victory against the Loggers.

Junior Cooper Diedrich paced Athens with 22 points. Diedrich and Diethelm tied for the team lead in rebounds with six each, while Janke added five boards.

Athens downed Nekoosa, 79-65, at home on Monday. Diethelm led the Bluejays with 25 points and Diedrich chipped in 24. Cody Lepak and Janke scored 10 points apiece. Lepak paced the team in rebounds with 11 and Janke had nine.

The Bluejays improve their overall record to 3-1 this season.
