Auburndale/Marathon wrestlers prevail

Stratford wins on a tiebreaker

Auburndale/Marathon’s co-op varsity wrestling team edged Eau Claire Memorial, 36-30, in a non-conference dual match on Saturday at Auburndale High School.

The following five Auburndale/ Marathon wrestlers pinned their opponents: Derek Vesley of Marathon at 132 pounds, Noah Altmann of Auburndale at 138, Jared Sweno of Marathon at 145, Cody Poeschel of Auburndale at 182 pounds and Sloan Welch of Auburndale at 195. Logan Werner of Marathon received a forfeit win at 285 pounds.

Auburndale/Marathon’s wrestling co-op squad, which is only for this season, evened its match record to 1-1 this season. Auburndale/Marathon lost its road match against Tomah, 48-33, on Dec. 4.

Dylan Dodson of Marathon pinned his Tomah opponent at 106 pounds, Derek Vesely won a 12-8 decision at 132, Jared Sweno earned a pin at 138 and Jacob Smith of Marathon executed a pin at 145. Sloan Welch of Auburndale pinned his opponent at 195 pounds and Brice Thiel of Auburndale earned a pin at 220.

Edgar/Athens victorious

The Edgar/Athens co-op wrestling team beat Spencer/Marshfield Columbus, 78-12, on Dec. 8 at Athens High School. Jesse Jisko of Edgar pinned his opponent at 160 pounds and Waylon Wirkus of Edgar earned a pin at 285. Collin Gajewski, Daxton Duberstein, Braden Finck, Kalvin Kingsley and Keghan Hartway of Edgar each received forfeit wins in their weight classes.

Athens’ top returning wrestlers for co-head coaches Dale Westfall and Jodi Gauerke are senior Patrick Redmann, junior Brooks Kraus and sophomores Conner Lewandowski and Kyler Ellenbecker.

Edgar/Athens nipped Rosholt, 22-21, in a road dual match on Tuesday. Wrestlers gaining individual competitive wins were Keghan Hartway of Edgar with a 15-3 major decision at 160 pounds, Collin Gajewski of Edgar with a pin at 170 and Brooks Kraus of Athens with a pin at 120.

The Edgar/Athens co-op wrestling squad, which is only for this season, next wrestles against Whitehall at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Edgar High School.

Tigers take the tiebreaker

Stratford’s wrestling team gained a tiebreaker for a 40-39 match win at Tomah on Friday. Stratford and Tomah ended their match tied, at 39 points each, but the ninth tie breaking criteria, which is the most first points in matches, gave Stratford an extra point for the win.

The following four Stratford wrestlers earned pins in their competitive bouts against Tomah: Logan Gliniecki at 138 pounds, Gavin Drexler at 145, Jackson Ormond at 182 and Logan Rueth at 195. Cole Marten of Stratford won a 2-0 decision at 285 pounds. Tiger grapplers Elijah Lucio and Hunter Ford each gained forfeit wins in their weight classes.

Stratford improves to 2-0 this season after its non-conference match wins against Medford and Tomah. Stratford next wrestles at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, at Fennimore and at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29, vs. Amherst.
