Lehman brothers face off in playoffs Lehman brothers face off in playoffs

Edgar natives and brothers Marshall and Reed Lehman coached against each other in football for the first time on Friday, and it just so happens it was in the playoffs.

Marshall has been Stratford’s defensive coordinator for many years, while this is Reed’s first season as Neillsville/Granton’s head football coach. They are the sons of Larry and Tracey Lehman of Edgar, who also have two other sons, Shay and Blake.

Brothers Marshall and Reed convened on the football field to chat after Stratford’s 38-0 win in the WIAA Division 4 playoff opening game. Reed joked with Marshall about how earlier in the week Marshall warned his younger brother that he’d blitz his linebackers in an attempt to sack Warriors senior quarterback Braden Trunkel.

It turns out Marshall was true to his word, because Stratford senior outside linebacker Hunter Ford blitzed on two straight plays against Neillsville/Granton’s offense. Ford turned both blitzes into quarterback sacks.

“It was nice to coach against each other,” Marshall said. “This is Reed’s first year as a head coach and he’s taking on a Stratford team that’s used to being in the playoffs compared to his team that isn’t accustomed to performing in playoff situations. It was fun to coach against each other and hopefully we’ll have more chances down the road with some competitive games.”

Although Neillsville/ Granton only won one game this season, 21-20 at Osseo/Fairchild, Reed is excited about his team’s potential in the future.

“We were young on both sides of the ball but it was a pretty good experience in my first time as a football head coach this season,” he said. “I leaned on my brother Marshall a lot for information in the past few years, and we run the same defense that Stratford does.”
