Cloverbelt crowns cross country champions

Colby-Abbotsford and McDonell Central repeated as girls and boys team champions during Tuesday’s Cloverbelt Conference cross country championship meet hosted by Columbus Catholic.

The boys title was the fourth in a row for McDonell, while the Colby-Abbotsford girls completed a three-peat.

Colby-Abbotsford finished with 55 points to beat Altoona (74), Fall Creek (78), Loyal-Greenwood (122), Eau Claire Regis (132), McDonell Central (136), Cadott (165), Neillsville-Granton (185) and Osseo-Fairchild (189). Thorp-Gilman, Stanley-Boyd, Spencer, Columbus Catholic and Owen-Withee did not field full squads.

For Thorp-Gilman, junior Kate Schraufnagel was 32nd out of 68 runners in 24:13.4 and freshman Pepper-Rae Werner was 56th in 27:03.7.

Loyal-Greenwood’s Savannah Schley won the individual championship with a time of 19:29.5, 12.8 seconds ahead of runner-up Jenna Anders of Fall Creek.

McDonell edged Altoona 60-67 to win the boys team title. Neillsville-Granton (87) was third, followed by Cadott (115), Loyal-Greenwood (123), Colby-Abbotsford (127), Stanley-Boyd (173), Columbus Catholic (181) and Spencer (208). Thorp-Gilman, Fall Creek, Osseo-Fairchild, Eau Claire Regis and Owen-Withee were incomplete.

McDonell’s Dan Anderson won his second straight Cloverbelt title with a time of 16:46.3, 5.6 seconds ahead of Colby-Abbotsford’s Chase Oehmichen.

For Thorp-Gilman, freshman Luke Schraufnagel was 29th in 19:34.3, sophomore Braxton Stark was 48th in 21:29.1, junior Jacob Barth was 55th in 22:05.8 and senior Wyatt Luzinski was 60th in 22:55.9.

Thorp-Gilman has been bumped up to Division 2 for this fall’s revised WIAA post-season and will compete in Tuesday’s subsectional meet hosted by Stratford at Frey Field.
