Wolfpack finishes duals; gears up for Lakeland meet at Flambeau

The Cornell-Gilman wrestlers finished the dual-meet portion of this year’s Lakeland Conference schedule with a 3-4 record after the Wolfpack went 1-2 at Friday’s Clear Lake Quad.

Cornell-Gilman lost matchups with the host Warriors 30-24 and the Luck Coop 46-18. They outscored Flambeau 30-18 in their dual meet.

The Wolfpack had three wrestlers go 3-0 on the night. They were Ethan Person, Julian Krizan and Andrew Olson. Braeden Person went 1-2, winning against Flambeau and losing to a couple of the conference’s top wrestlers in Clear Lake’s Matt Anderson and Luck/Frederic/ Grantsburg/Siren’s Landyn Johnson.

Ali Blodgett went 1-2 and Kalley Krizan went 1-1.

In a home meet against Bruce Jan. 23, the Wolfpack and Red Raiders ended the dual meet tied at 30-30. The Wolfpack won the tiebreaker and was declared the 31-30 winner.

Braeden Person won his match by pin over Bruce’s 132-pound wrestler Aaron Lloyd and Julian Krizan won his 160-pound match by pin over James Shrewsberry. Ethan Person (113), Andrew Olson and Ali Blodgett (145) won by forfeit. Kalley Krizen was pinned by Harold Garcia at 138 pounds.

Bruce won by forfeit at 170, 182, 195 and 220 pounds.

The eight-team Lakeland Conference championships will be held Saturday at Flambeau High School starting at 10 a.m. This year’s tournament will have a different look as defending champion St. Croix Falls and Cameron, usually one of the stronger squads are now both members of the Heart O’ North Conference.

Of the remaining teams, Shell Lake was last year’s runner-up in the conference meet, which was held in Gilman, Unity was fourth, the Luck Co-op was fifth, Flambeau was sixth, Cornell-Gilman was seventh, Clear Lake was eighth, Bruce was ninth and Turtle Lake-Clayton was 10th.

Returning champions at this year’s meet should include sophomore Taeden Nichols of the Luck Co-op, who is ranked seventh this week by Wisconsin Wrestling at 120 pounds in Division 2; senior Ivan Ruble of Clear Lake, who got honorable mention this week at 170 pounds in Division 3 and sophomore Bryce Best of Flambeau, who is ranked seventh at 182 pounds in Division 3.

Additional ranked wrestlers in the Lakeland Conference field this week in Division 3 include Clear Lake freshman Dominic Leintz, fourth at 113 pounds; sixth-ranked junior Matt Anderson at 126 pounds; Shell Lake junior Tyler Schunck, ninth at 126 pounds, and Clear Lake freshman Mitchell Anderson, 11th at 106 pounds. Unity senior Jack Nelson (182) and Shell Lake senior Blake Flach (170) are getting honorable mention.

In Division 2, the Luck Co-op’s Nolan Johnson, a junior, is ranked sixth at 106 pounds, senior Dominic Caroon is ranked 10th at 195 pounds, and Landyn Johnson, a senior, is getting honorable mention at 145.
