The Boy Scouts of Troop 688 wish to thank all the citizens of Stratford who purchased the “Little Johns” from them. They especially would like to thank James Linzmeyer, scout master, Frank Ellenbecher and Dr. Kucirek for taking the boys on their house-to-house canvass.

Stratford Schools to Open August 22

Fifty-one Stratford public school teachers will greet students on Thursday, August 22. This date marks the beginning of classes for approximately 896 students for the 1974-75 school year.

New principal at St. Joseph’s introduced

Peggy Schoenfuss is the new principal at St. Joseph School. She returns to Stratford after being principal in Cazenovia for the past two years. Schoenfuss, her husband, Mark, and son, Jacob, are happy to be back around family and friends.

Two local wrestlers attend national camp

Will Stuart and Aaron Jochimsen attended the 28 day J. Robinson Intensive Wrestling Camp in Minnesota the month of July. They both graduated from one of the toughest wrestling camps in the country. MARATHON JOURNAL

Giants Take First in Little League Finals

In the final Little League game of the season, Brian Hurtis pitched the first place Giants to a 7-2 win over the second place Black Sox. The Giants had a 10-0 record.

Eddies Bar Takes Fast Pitch Tourney

In the finals of the fast-pitch tournament, Eddies Bar of Hamburg beat Stanleys of Marathon by a score of 2-0. Third place went to Calmes Bar after beating Swatloski Trucking. Bozo Zinkowich of Eddies was named the most valuable pitcher, Roger Rasmussen of Stanley the top infielder, and Tom Schmidt of Eddies the most valuable outfielder.

Fairest of the Fair

1973 Athens Fair Queen June Schultz crowned Cheryl Zocher as the 1974 Fair Queen in ceremonies Friday night. Miss Zocher and Sherri Rinninger were this year’s contestants. As the new queen, Miss Zocher was on hand to give out ribbons and to lead the parade on Sunday afternoon.

Edgar Lady Wins in Fish Contest

Irene Guenther, Route 3, Edgar, has won a third prize in the St. Paul Dispatch and Pioneer Press summer-long fishing contest. Guenther won with a six pound, one ounce, bass from Potato Lake near Chetek, during the contest’s eleventh week.

Fair Steer Finally Captured

A 1,300 pound black steer who escaped from the Athens Fair early Friday morning was finally captured Wednesday morning, according to his owner Douglas Kops, Colby.

The steer had eluded his captors by hiding out in Athens Park, near STH 97, and in a nearby cornfield. The steer was captured on the Heldt farm.

Racer in second

Tony Lenard, Marathon, currently holds second place in the season long points race for the American Motorcyclist Association short track motorcyclist title.

Edgar 10th graders earn “star” from tax group The Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance has included Edgar High School among a premier grouping of 27 Wisconsin “star schools” whose 10th graders performed uniformly well in all five subject areas of the 1999 Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam.

Shannon Knetter, Stratford, guided this jersey around the ring after it was awarded the Supreme Cow title at Athens Junior Fair last weekend. Knetter represented the Stratford FFA.
