Tremendous Crowds At “Progress Days”
Farm Progress Days are over, and they were believed to be the largest ever held in Wisconsin, with over 125,000 people attending. Perhaps the biggest piece of news to the local folks was the phenomenal success of the food stands. Six stands were placed at strategic positions in Tent City, and all did a very fine business.
Goldbach Wins World Championship
Cindy Goldbach, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Goldbach of Marathon won the world drum majorette chapionship at the national baton twirling association’s “America’s Youth on Parade,” held at Notre Dame University. She has been active in NBTA baton twirling for more than 14 years and has received in excess of 650 awards during that time.

Wisconsin Valley Fair Time
Jackie Gliniecki, Marathon County Dairy Ambassador, Stratford, gave out awards at the Wisconsin Valley Fair held in Wausau. Local winners included Kellie McMeeken, Champion Suffolk Ram and Heather Reichert, Senior Grand Champion Horse.
Bear’s Run changes location
Due to trees down in the school forest, the Bear’s Run will be moved to the Klemme Reserve. Area exercise enthusiasts can enter one of five age categories for the 1.5 mile run/walk or the 3.1 mile run. Preregistration is $3 and $4 on the day of the race/walk.

Tourney Winners
Ellenbecker’s Skippers won the first annual Athens Slo-Pitch tournament Sunday night after completing the schedule of games undefeated. Teammates were Marney Boris, Nancy Ellenbecker, Mary Yessa, Doreen Weiler, Debbie Yessa, Linda Weiler, Pete Boris, Ken Ellenbecker, Captain Bill Yessa, Gary Miller, Ray Chojnowski and Bill Ellenbecker.
Child Taken to Hospital
Only one call was received by the Edgar Ambulance during the past week. On August 1, the unit was called to transport Tammy Punke to Wausau Hospital North. The child had been riding in a camper, fell out the rear door and was run over by a boat and trailer. She was not seriously injured.

Marathon legion donates
The Alois Dreikosen Post #469 of the American Legion in Marathon at their monthly meeting decided to donate $1,350 to the Marathon High School Color Guard. Another donation of $161 went to the World War II Memorial which will be built shortly. It was also reported that new planks were being put on the bleachers at the Veterans Park.
Marathon officials say fires are out of hand Marathon Village President Gary Ruplinger said that some village residents were using “recreational fires” in their backyard to dispose of garbage and that, in some cases, the fires were “getting out of hand.” Marathon Police Chief Lauren Knoeck said that it was unlawful to burn garbage in the village and that citations can be issued.
