Stratford journal 50 years ago... thursday, January 10, 1974 Ruben Davel Retires from Geo. Davel On January 1, 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kraus became partners with her father, Arthur Davel, in the Geo. Davel & Co. store in Stratford. They purchased from Reuben Davel his share in the business.

The late George Davel Sr. purchased the store and building in 1937 from the bankrupt R. Connor Co. Today, more than 35 years later, occasionally you hear the store called “the Company store.” Although started under new ownership in the very depth of the worst depression in our country’s history, the Davel store prospered and has always done a very good business. Also, referring to snowmobiles in the village, Chief Nehrbass said the alley running behind the IGA store, the bank and extending to the laundromat is not open to snowmobiles.

“It never was, it isn’t, and probably never will be,” said the chief. 25 years ago... wednesday, January 13, 1999 End of an era: Edgar gets a new fire chief The Edgar Fire Department elected Richard Schroeder as chief, replacing George Fergot, who announced his retirement in December.
