Farmers Market

The following statement was released by Randel and Kerry Wokatsch, Shelley Kage, Dale Oestrich and Barb Parlier: “Year two of Marathon City Farmers Market (MCFM) is already in the books. What a great second year it was! During our peak month of July, there were over 40 vendors in attendance. It was very rewarding for us to see the connections happen between the vendors and the customers. We also noticed a social aspect happening, as random and purposeful gatherings of friends, neighbors and relatives often took place.”

“Once again, the MCFM was blessed with nice weather for most of our market dates.”

“The feedback we’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have said the MCFM offers much of what larger markets do, with better parking and less chaos. We have accomplished our second year goal of being self-sustaining by balancing our income and expenses without donations.”

“The MCFM Board is already planning for next year. Our number one goal is attracting more customers. If the MCFM has sufficient customers, the vendors we have will stay, and new vendors will want to come. MCFM has worked very hard to facilitate an attractive, organized and vendor/customer friendly market, but the success of MCFM is not only up to us. Our market will go as far and be as successful as our community makes it, and to those of you who have supported the MCFM by attending on Thursday afternoons and have mentioned it to others. We realize we live in an area where many have their own gardens, but the market has much more to offer than just vegetables. Also, we likely have a greater variety of vegetables than your own garden. We will always welcome ideas and suggestions to improve MCFM. See you in June!”

C ounty Holidays at the Houses

The Marathon County Historical Society will present its annual Holidays at the Houses on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Woodson History Center and Yawkey House Museum will be decorated for the holidays, and visitors will experience the season with live entertainment, children’s activities, and the always popular Friends of Wausau Historic Landmarks’ Sweet Landmarks Gingerbread Contest.

This year’s theme will be “Making Christmas Memories.” What are the things you look forward to doing every year during the holiday season? What reminds you of home? Decorating cookies, caroling, holiday storytime, vintage toy and Barbie displays, decorating a tree, photo fun, coloring contest and, of course, Santa will keep everyone having a festive time while making new memories.

Deer dumpster

The Central Wisconsin Conservation Club Inc, in conjunction with Marathon County Waste Management, is sponsoring a dumpster for the disposal of deer carcass waste (rib cages, heads, legs and fat scrap) during the deer firearms season. The dumpster will be placed in the Edgar Waste Disposal site, located off of East Limits Road. There will also be a separate container placed there for unwanted deer hides, which will be donated to the Lions Camp for the Blind. The dumpster will be there through Dec. 10.

This program is being done as a service to the surrounding communities to help keep the environment cleaner from improperly disposed of in rural ditches. People are asked to only use the dumpster for the waste it is intended for so that the project can continue to grow in the future.
