MCPL Story Time
Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to the Athens library branch for these 30-minute programs. There will be reading, singing and other literature-based activities on Mondays, October 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, 10:30-11 a.m.
Senior Card Group
The Senior Citizens card group met on September 21 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Two games of Sheepshead were played. Andy Hoef won the first game and Butch Boris took second place. Alvira Henrichs won the second game and Rick Schaetzel took second. Low score went to Bitsy Ewan.
Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
Farmers Market
The Athens Farmers Market will be held each Tuesday, 4-7 p.m., at Athens Memorial Park.
E DGAR Birth announcement
Honey Jane Overbeck was born on September 21 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital weighing 9 pounds 12 ounces and measuring 20 inches long. Honey’s parents are Kaylee and Mitchell Overbeck of Stevens Point.
MCPL Book Club
New members are always welcome to join in the discussion. This month’s event will be held on October 10, 12 p.m., where attendees will discuss “Practical Magic” by Alice Hoffman.
Senior citizen dinner
The Edgar Lions Club will be sponsoring a complimentary chicken dinner for Edgar senior citizens on October 12.
All meals will be in carryout containers and should be picked up between 5-6 p.m. at the Edgar Fire Station. To order a meal, please call Marie at 715-573-5616 or Kathy at 715-721-6520 between October 2 and 10.
MCPL Story Times
Children of all ages and their parents/caregivers are invited to story time at the Edgar library to enjoy stories, songs and other literaturebased activities. This month’s dates are October 3 and 17, 11-11:30 a.m.
Pokémon Club
The monthly Pokémon Club for upper-elementary and middle school-aged kids will be held October 16, 4-5 p.m., at the Edgar library branch. There are different Pokémon activities each month and the events allow for attendees to play the card game with other kids, too.
Senior citizen athletic passes
The annual free athletic passes for all citizens 62 years of age or older residing in the Edgar School District are now available.
Passes are available in the high school office or from ticket sellers at events. Passes are not accepted for any WIAA tournament events which Edgar may host.
M ARATHON MCPL Book Club

Birth announcement
Mia Ann Schumacher was born on September 22 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital weighing 8 pounds 1 ounce and measuring 20.5 inches long. Mia’s parents are Wendy and Matthew Schumacher of Marathon.
Auxiliary minutes
Vice president Nicole Skrzypchak called the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 469 meeting to order on September 14 with 20 members and one guest with her family present.
Jenna Hafferman read her Americanism essay, “What Patriotism Means to Me.”
Opening meeting protocol was followed.
Opening prayer was given by Chaplain Julie Carriveau.
The minutes of the August meeting were read by Secretary Kathy Grell. Motion to accept the minutes was made by Marlene Seubert and seconded by Joanna Grell. Motion carried.
The treasurer’s report was read by treasurer Edee Zuleger. Motion to accept the treasurer’s report was made by Cassie Lang and seconded by Peggy Lemanski. Motion carried.
A bill for swag for the parade was submitted. Motion to pay bills was made by Mary Rosensprung, seconded by Mary Jane Cramer. Motion carried. Printing costs were donated by Cherry Tree Dental for flyers that were passed out at the parade.
Committee reports Membership 12 members have renewed for the 2024 year. One new member is starting the process. There are several other new individuals who have expressed interest in joining. Individuals that are the spouse or child of a veteran and would like more information, contact a member of the auxiliary.
Juniors Melanie Rodreguez met with a group of juniors to stuff bags for the parade and sent 20 cards to veterans on the upcoming Honor Flight.
Thank you cards were read from the family of Margaret Shidell and from the Special Olympics.
The fall conference will be held Oct. 28 and the county meeting will be held Oct. 29.
In old business: Thanks given to all members and volunteers who helped in the Fun Days stand this year.
Members and volunteers watch for a new online method for signing up next season. For those who are not yet into computers, contact an auxiliary member if interested in helping.
Cherry Tree Dental donated covering the cost of flyers handed out at the parade, Marathon Cheese donated the cheese slices and River Valley donated the LP gas for the weekend.
Review Standing Rules: Several changes to standing rules were voted on and passed at the meeting. Copies of the new rules will be available on request.
New business: Members of the Rib Ramblers 4-H club want to do a Veterans Day Breakfast, more information to follow.
Suggestions for next year’s Fun Days include: Get a supply of “Cool to be Patriotic” buttons to sell at the stand; plan an actual float for the parade from the American Legion Auxiliary.
Wreaths Across America is again requesting donations to cover the cost of placing wreaths on every grave at King Veterans Home this Christmas. A motion was made to donate to the program by Julie Carriveau, seconded by Mary Rosensprung. Motion carried.
A motion was made to increase the stipend for the person who cleans the bathroom each morning by Joyce Blyton, seconded by Cassie Lang. Motion carried.
Closing prayer was given by Chaplain Julie Carriveau.
The next meeting will be held on October 12 at 6:30 p.m. at village hall.

The Marathon City Farmers Market will run every Thursday from 2-6 p.m. until October 26. The market is located in downtown Marathon at 400 Main St.

Join other literary enthusiasts and Stratford library staff for a discussion of “Marmee” by Sarah Miller at 1 p.m. on October 18.
Museum exhibit: Our German Neighbors Past and Present
The Stratford Area Historical Society is honored to host the traveling exhibit, “Neighbors Past and Present, The German Experience” at the Stratford Museum. The University of Wisconsin- Madison Max Kade Institute for German American Studies exhibit is open to the public Thursdays through Saturdays until October 7.
Museum quality panels on topics of immigration, tradition, beliefs, education and rural life depict the German experience of migration and settlement of Wisconsin. Along with the panels, items used in the daily lives of Stratford area German residents will be on display. Newly donated items are also included in the exhibit: Ebenezer United Church of Christ 1897 membership book entries and church history; an area family photo album that highlights a 1912 Germany trip; vintage “Magic Lantern” glass slides; various German publications and other historical items.
There is no charge to view the exhibit. SAHS is a non-profit organization that serves the village of Stratford and surrounding townships. Donations are appreciated and help to further the mission of SAHS to preserve, protect and promote the area’s history. Mary Connor Pierce and the Gordon R. Connor Foundation also gave funding in support of the exhibit.
Museum hours are Thursdays and Fridays, 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturdays, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. The museum is located in Klemme Park off of Legion Street in Stratford.
