Seven total members of the Edgar FFA had the opportunity to go to the Washington Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. this past summer. One member, Carver Higgins, went solo the week of June 21-25. The other six members, which included Katrina Mata, Rakel Mata, Olysta Baumann, Natalie Krause, Amber Skrzypcak, and Alexa Lang, went the week of July 12-15.

During the conference the group sat in on multiple leadership meetings where they learned the importance of advocating for agriculture, strengthening leadership skills, creative thinking, community involvement, and developing key skills on how to run a chapter. The motto of the week was, “Doing what we can, with where we are, with what we have” which was repeatedly said throughout the week.

There were hundreds of FFA members from across the country at the conference that the students were able to build connections with. All of the students were split up into small groups, where throughout the week they would refl ect and talk about the things they were learning about and worked together to spark ideas as to what they can bring back to their chapter.

Along with attending meetings the students also visited multiple monuments including the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, World War II Memorial, and many more. During the final day of the conference they had a free afternoon where they were able to venture around the streets of Washington, D.C. in small groups. One small group visited the White House and the Library of Congress.

During the final session of the conference, the students gathered to put together over 70,000 meals for Meals of Hope for those in need in the Washington, D.C. area. WLC was an eye opening and unforgettable week for the seven Edgar FFA members.
