Book discussion

Join the Marathon County Public Library for a virtual reading and discussion with Wisconsin author and journalist Lawrence Tabak about his new book “Foxconned” on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 7-8 p.m.

In 2018, the State of Wisconsin signed an economic-development deal with Foxconn, the China-based electronics manufacturer, nominally securing 13,000 jobs. Yet as Tabak shows, the deal is a disaster in every dimension. Disenfranchising American citizens of power, money and land, the Foxconn deal demonstrates all the ways that the pursuit of jobs can ruin American communities nationwide.

“Foxconned” tells this story not as a singular event, but as emblematic of a trend that shifts tax dollars from education, health care and infrastructure to corporate coffers. Governors and municipal leaders make huge bets on selected companies in the hope of political halos. Instead, it’s become one of the under-recognized forces of wealth transfer and income inequity ripping the fabric of civil society.

The discussion is free and open to the public, no registration required. This virtual event will be held via Go-ToMeeting. Click the “Attend” link on this page to join, and call 715-261-7230 for more information.
