Fairy cinema

Join the Central Wisconsin Book Festival on Sunday, Sept. 26, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.for a discussion related to books and cinema - specifically, film adaptations of the famed Wizard of Oz.

Shortly after his blockbuster success with “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” L. Frank Baum turned his attention to the medium of stagecraft, and then to cinema. The objective: to bring his imaginary world to vivid life, using state-of-theart media technologies to convince audiences, at least for a moment, that Oz was real. This talk by Cary Elza, associate professor of media studies at UW-Stevens Point, will discuss an often-ignored set of precursors to the famous 1939 film, delving into Baum’s inspirations, his movie studio, and his silent-era adaptations of his own books.

Free and open to the public. Click the “Attend” button on this page to join the event when it begins! Call the Marathon County Public Library at 715-261-7230 for more information.

Seasoned players

The Seasoned Players softball league has recognized some notable players in the recently concluded season.

John Peterlik gets mention as an all around best player. In the outfield Jake, Frenchie and Darrel Tesch were rocks. In the infield Heidi, Billy and Greg Streit made play after play. Alex Mashak may have had the highest batting aver- age. Fritz and Fleabag were stellar at the plate. Mike Boehm had some game winning plays. Head had the lowest ERA.

The statistic of the year is that Edgar Lanes (yes, Edgar Lanes!) broke Camouche’s consecutive game strikeout string.

Keeping players hydrated this year were concession stand workers Allison Kornach, Mekenzie Durr, Allysan Lehman and Elizabeth Tess.

The most senior of the seasoned players were John Griesmer and John Vanderleest.

Scholarships

Nominations of Wisconsin grades PreK through 12 teachers and principals can now be submitted online at www. kohleducation.org for the 2022 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation teacher Fellowship and principal Leadership awards.

The deadline for submission is Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 5 p.m. central time. Awards are $6,000, with an additional $6,000 grant going to the school of each selected teacher and principal. For teachers or principals to be eligible, they must be nominated by a parent, student, other teacher, community member, or school administrator. Wisconsin teachers and principals in grades PreK through 12 who plan to continue in their current capacity for at least one year are eligible. The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Fellowship rewards teachers who have demonstrated superior ability to inspire love of learning in their students, have motivated others, and have provided meritorious service both in and outside the classroom. It also recognizes and supports principals who demonstrate administrative leadership and positively influence school culture. Selection of recipients will be made by a state-level panel composed of representatives from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Association of Wisconsin School Administrators, cooperative educational service agencies, several educationrelated associations, and community representatives.

Since the program was established in 1990, the Herb Kohl Foundation has awarded 3,313 grants to teachers and principals, and 3,313 matching grants to their schools throughout the state for a total of $13,396,000.
