Births

A son, Waylon George, was born to Michelle and Derek Urmanski, Edgar, at the Wausau Aspirus Hospital on Aug. 11, 2021. The infant weighed seven pounds, 14 ounces and measured 21 inches at birth.

Grandparents are Jay and Sandy Schmidt, Athens, and Ray and Barb Urmanski, Edgar. Great-grandparents are Dolores Schmidt, Marshfi eld, and Robert and Bonnie Smaglik, Marshfield.

Therapy dog

Edgar Public Schools has approved the use of a therapy dog, Archie, in school classrooms. The dog belongs to Matt Reinders, high school agriculture instructor. To be come certified, Archie attended classes held at The Bark Academy.

Archie is a hypoallergenic Bernedoodle, a breed known for their affectionate, loyal, and mild-mannered personalities. Archie began training as a puppy and completed his certification in August 2021. He has passed beginner, intermediate, and advanced obedience training, the Canine Good Citizens Test (CGC), the CGC-Community Test; the CGC-Urban Test and the Therapy Dog Certification Test.

The purpose of a therapy dog is to help students feel more comfortable at school and within their classroom environment. Research has shown that bringing a therapy dog into classrooms can improve the physical, social, cognitive, and emotional wellbeing of students. In addition, they can help students improve their reading fluency and comprehension, by helping them feel more relaxed and comfortable while reading.

Archie will come to school every day of the school week and will be used throughout the K-12 facility. Archie’s tentative first day on the job is Sept. 1. There will be no cost to the district for the therapy dog.

St. John’s plan

St. John’s Catholic School, Edgar, has announced its plan to deal with COVID-19.

Under the plan, no one should come to school if the symptoms checklist indicates a student or staff member should remain home. Masks are highly recommended for all students and staff, yet not required. Masks will be available from the school if needed. If total staff and student population positive for COVID-19 at any one time increases significantly other safety protocols may be implemented.

Students and staff who test positive for COVID-19 will be asked to follow the Marathon County Health Department quarantine options timeline and must be fever free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. Students will be unable to ride the bus or participate in Edgar Public School sponsored events for 10 days from the onset of symptoms and may return to those activities after that time provided all other protocols have been met. Vaccination does not impact isolation for a positive case. Individuals with COVID-19 related symptoms will be sent home. Siblings of individuals with Covid related symptoms will be checked for symptoms, if no symptoms siblings may stay in school, if symptoms exist siblings will be sent home.

Book club

The Edgar Book Club will discuss “Normal People” by Sally Rooney on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Rooney’s 2019 novel centers around Connell and Marianne, who pretend not to know each other at school. He’s popular and well-adjusted, star of the school football team, while she is lonely, proud, and intensely private. But when Connell comes to pick his mother up from her job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers - one they are determined to conceal.

The group will meet at Scotch Creek Park in Edgar with the Edgar Branch Public Library as a backup location in case of inclement weather. New people are always welcome to participate in the book club.

Spectators

Edgar Public Schools has announced it will not limit spectators at this year’s sporting events. Passes and athletic schedules are available in the Edgar High School Office or from ticket sellers at events. Passes are not accepted for WIAA tournament events.

If health conditions change, the district’s spectator policy will change accordingly.

Seasoned players

During the Edgar Seasoned Players softball action on Aug. 19, Strobes picked up a victory over Chads Auto.

Chads Auto started out the night hitting, taking a 1-0 lead and leaving the bases jammed. Landmark tied the game on a two out single by Camouche. Fleabag led a three run, seven hit third inning for Landmark which was enough for a 4-2 victory. Andy, Bill, Cody and Dar- rel “ DT” Tecsh were all two forthree for Landmark. Jimmy Lavicka picked up his first win of the year.

Beans Evergreen Disposal was still feeling “it” after last week’s victory. They slashed out hits and played timely defense in a 9-4 win over Louie/ Werner. L/W loaded the bases in the second and third innings but could not open the flood gates. L/W defense was reportedly a bit more leaky.

Village Pharm came out with a vengeance against the formerly undefeat- ed Round of Mulligans. Down 12-0 after three innings, the Mullies crept back in, aided by four uncharacteristic Pharm errors. Mike “The Agent” Boehm’s great catch kept it close. The Pharm’s 14-10 win assured them the league title with a week to go. Alex Mashak again led the Pharms 24 hit attack going three for three with three runs. Dave “Meat Man” Smith and Baum were three for four, Snipes and Zach Paul three for five with Zach having a triple and scoring three times.

On the little diamond, Edgar Lanes went up 1-0 in the first. Strobes came alive in the third inning and also scored in the fourth and fifth inning in the 7-1 win. Joe D snabbed some hot line drives on the mound and Tad and Tim had doubles for Edgar Lanes.
