Anniversary
Friends and family gathered to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Barkley Anderson, town of Rib Falls, on Aug. 1 at Pine Valley Golf Course in Marathon.
The couple wed on Aug. 21, 1971, in Duluth, Minn. in a small ceremony. Over the past half century, the Anderson family has added five children and eight grandchildren.
Their advice for making it to 50 years: “put God first and choose love each day.” Mr. Anderson was the Superintendent of Schools for the Edgar School District for 15 years and the Thorp School District for six years. He also served the Village of Edgar for three years as acting administrator and drove school bus for Marathon School District until 2018. His wife made their home and worked for 20 years at Fiskars, Inc. prior to her retirement in 2010.
Around 50 guests were in attendance at the anniversary celebration including their children and grandchildren: Aaron Anderson, Stratford, Christopher Anderson (Melissa, Scott and Evelyn) of Eau Claire, Amy Anderson of Milton, Kimberly Stelzer (Brian, Alexis and Chloe) of Wausau, and Kate Dixon (Michael, Finley, Rhyan, Mikey, and Tory) of New Castle, Va.
Historical society
Join the Marathon County Historical Society (MCHS) throughout August for a series of short programs about Marathon County parks, in conjunction with their new exhibit!
In July, the MCHS opened its newest exhibit, “Preserved For Generations,” on the history of the Marathon County Parks System. In August, the society will look at a few other distinctive parks in Marathon County, which are not in the county system.
All History Chats programs begin at 12:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live simultaneously via Zoom, the Historical Society’s Facebook page and its YouTube channel. If you can’t join them live, you can watch archived recordings anytime at the same places.
These programs, which are a collaborative effort between the Historical Society and the Marathon County Public Library, are free to watch and open to all ages, no registration required. Call the Historical Society at 715-842-5750 for more information.
Here’s the schedule for the remainder of the month: Aug. 19: “Eight Things to Do at Rothschild Park.” Rothschild Park has been home to a number of attractions over the years. This week, Ben Clark will explain the history of the park by highlighting eight unique activities you could only do at Rothschild Park; from dancing and roller skating in the Pavilion to riding a roller coaster and ski jumping outside it.
Aug. 26: “Behind the Scenes of the Parks Exhibit.” Now that “Preserved For Generations: A Century of the Marathon County Parks System” is finished and open to the public, this presentation takes the opportunity to chat with the exhibit team that created it. Learn about how the exhibit was created, and about some of the successes and challenges encountered along the way.
