St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church has scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony for its Little Lions Child Care Center after its 10:15 a.m. service on Sunday, April 18. A ceremony will be held at the church and repeated at the construction site on the east side of CTH NN. Child care center director Kristin Mantey plans to be at the event.

The St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Council on April 5 approved a bid from Scherrer Construction, Wausau, to build the child care center for $2,211,371. It is expected construction will start Monday, April 26.

St. Mary’s winners

Students at St. Mary’s School, Marathon, took top places in an Education Contest sponsored by St. Rose Court No. 1062 of the Catholic Daughters of America. Winners included: art- Hailey Martin, second place, Mayven Schneider, third place; computer art-Velda Mechelke, first place, Sara Marek, second place; essay-Natilee Hummer, first place, Velda Mechelke, second place; photography, Will Bretzke, first place, Sara Marek, third place; and poetry-Paityn Brickner, second place; Velda Mechelke, third place.

First place entries will advance to state level competition.

Three St. Mary’s School students were recognized for artworks submitted in a Knights of Columbus Keep Christ in Christmas contest. They are Fred Tylinski, Haylee Altenhofen and Aveana Wiesman.

Little treasures

Adults and teenagers are invited to pick up a kit to make a beaded wrap bracelet at the Marathon City Branch Public Library through the month of April. The library will provide the supplies to make this “little treasure.” Registration is required.

Scouting for food

The Marathon Scouts BSA Troop 458 will collect food this year for the Marathon/Edgar Circle of Joy food pantry with a pick-up date of Saturday, April 17, starting at 9 a.m.

The Boy Scout can corral is open for use in the Village of Marathon City parking lot. Donated aluminum cans should all be placed in plastic bags.

Community sales

Marathon City will hold community garage sales Thursday, April 22, and Friday, April 23. Some houses will be open on Wednesday, April 21. Maps of houses with sales will be placed at participating houses.

Baby shower

Marathon area residents can participate in a United Way of Marathon County Community Baby Shower by donating items for Rebecca’s Closet at People’s State Bank, Marathon City.

Rebecca’s Closet is a volunteer-run project of Women United that helps low-income families with children by supplying clothing size infants through size 14/16. In 2020 there were 326 requests filled and 6,754 items went back into the community to help children in need. The most needed items right now are baby girls 0-3 month sleepers and onesies.

St. Anthony’s

St. Anthony’s Spirituality Center, Marathon, will host a Retreat for Spiritual seekers on Friday, April 23, through Sunday, April 25. Presenter Ruth Hoenick will help participants find new ways to connect the Holy Mystery with the Earth, compassion, Light and journaling.
