Edgar defeats school referendum

District townships say no
Edgar School District voters on Tuesday defeated a revenue cap referendum for the second time by a narrow margin.
The vote to approve a phased-in $800,000 increase in the district’s revenue cap was 532 to 568.
According to unofficial tallies reported by the Marathon County Clerk’s Office, the referendum received strong support in the villages of Edgar, 293-174, and Fenwood, 55-44, but was opposed in all district townships by, in some cases, lopsided margins. The townships include Cassel, Cleveland Emmet, Frankfort, Rib Falls, Rietbrock and Wien.
Administrator Dr. Cari Guden said the Edgar Board of Education would chart the district’s next step following Tuesday’s vote. “The unofficial count shows that the referendum has failed,” she said in a prepared statement. “As a school district, we will reconvene to determine our next steps. The school board will communicate future plans with the community as the plans unfold.”
According to a Department of Public Instruction website, Wisconsin school boards are able to float revenue cap referendums twice a year but they must be held at normally scheduled fall and spring elections.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission does not have a fall election scheduled on its calendar.
