A weekly perspective on sports

Casey Krautkramer Reporter The Record-Review

The 2020 fall sports season schedules just keep getting crazier, because some school districts are temporarily moving to virtual learning due to an outbreak of positive COVID-19 cases among students and staff.

For example, Marathon’s varsity football team began holding practices again today (Wednesday) after being under quarantine for two weeks. Marathon’s first football game this season was supposed to be on Friday, Oct. 16 on the road against Athens. This matchup, however, is no longer happening because all Athens varsity sports are postponed until Monday, Oct. 19, when the public school students return to inperson schooling. Marathon athletic director Curt Miller is now scrambling to find a different opponent for the Red Raiders varsity football team to play against on Oct. 16.

Abbotsford’s varsity football team received an unlucky draw against Edgar in its season-opening game this Friday, Oct. 9. The Falcons’ football has also been under quarantine this entire season until now, as they prepare to host the Wildcats.

Edgar is ranked first in this week’s Associated Press Small Division poll, which is voted on by sports writers and broadcasters throughout Wisconsin. Edgar received 86 first-place votes in the Small Division poll, which consists of high schools with 300 or less students.

Abbotsford actually garnered six votes, even though it hasn’t played a game yet this season. Colby, which like Abbotsford, is another new Marawood Conference opponent for Edgar this season, received two votes in the poll.

My prediction is Edgar steamrolls Abbotsford this Friday. The winner of the Edgar versus Colby football game on Friday, Oct. 30, should then determine this year’s Marawood Conference champion. I’ll give an edge to the Wildcats against the Hornets.

Stratford’s varsity football team is ranked seventh in this week’s Associated Press Medium Division, consisting of high schools with enrollments between 301 to 899 students.

The 2-0 Tigers will face their first big test of this season this week, as they travel to Spencer to play the 2-0 Spencer/ Marshfield Columbus Rockets in Central Wisconsin Conference-Large (CWC-Large) action.

The Athens football team was supposed to play a home-and-away series against Thorp in back-to-back weeks, but now all Athens varsity sports are postponed until Oct. 19 because of an outbreak of positive COVID-19 cases in students and staff.

This could’ve possibly been the first time in Wisconsin high school football history that teams played a home-andaway series against each other, because this doesn’t even happen in college football.
