Superintendent Winch updates school board on enrollment

Scott Winch, Stratford schools superintendent, reported at Monday’s Stratford Board of Education meeting the school district will see a decrease of six students from 4K through 12th grade in open enrollment for the 2020-21 school year.

Twenty students who live in the Stratford School District are open enrolled into other school districts for the 2020-21 school year, compared to 14 students from outside school districts choosing to open enroll into Stratford’s schools.

Ten of the 20 students open enrolling out of the Stratford School District are in 4K. Five of the 14 students open enrolling into the school district are also in 4K.

In other school news:

_ Stratford School District will hire Sarah Baltus of Marshfield as its sixth through ninth grade counselor and sixth through 12th grade Academic and Career Planning (ACP) coordinator. Baltus recently worked as a middle school counselor and assessment specialist in the Edgar School District.

_ The school board accepted the resignation of 10th and 11th grade social studies teacher Jacquelyn Moss, who has accepted a teaching job at Wausau West High School.

Winch told the school board he’d received 15 applicants for the high school social studies teaching job as of Monday night, but at first glance he didn’t think any of them were also qualified to become the new Stratford varsity head wrestling coach. Winch said he and Janeen LaBorde, Stratford middle and high school principal, would interview top candidates for the social studies teaching position on Monday, June 22.

_ The school board approved coaches for the 2020-21 fall cross country, football and volleyball seasons. High school math teacher Chris Fischer is a new high school football assistant coach this season in place of Joe Schwabe, who retired from coaching this spring. The school district is still seeking a high school assistant volleyball coach.

_ LaBorde reported students Tyler Holcomb and Janilee Weiland are eligible to graduate high school early in January of 2021.

She also said in her report middle school students who didn’t substantially engage in math and reading in the fourth quarter of this school year will take a foundations course to help them with their learning deficits for the first 12 weeks of the 2020-21 school year.

LaBorde said high school students with incomplete grades during the fourth quarter of this school year could have them changed to a no grade after this Tuesday, June 16. High school students can drop the classes instead so they don’t show up on their transcripts.

_ Winch reported he wants to create a return to school committee comprised of school district staff, school board members and parents of students to begin meeting after July 4 to discuss how the school buildings should be reopened to students for the 2020-21 school year.

He said there would be a shortened summer school session in August, which would include outside learning opportunities for children. Summer school would also help students from the elementary school transition to sixth grade in the middle school and students’ transition from the middle to high school for the 2020-21 school year.
