The following are events happening at Athens High School this week: The FCCLA students will decorate cookies with Athens Elementary School students this Friday, Feb. 14; a free pops concert, with donations welcome, is open to the public at 2 p.m. this Sunday, Feb. 16, in the high school commons and there will be a welding simulator competition at Athens High School during school hours this Monday, Feb. 17.

College graduates

The following three college students from Athens graduated from UW-Stevens Point during its commencement ceremony on Dec. 14, 2019: Brian Schaetzl, associate of arts and science degree; Jennifer Schmidt, bachlelor of science, business administration and accounting, Cum Laude and Courtney Schoenrock, bachelor of science, business administration and accounting.

500 Club

The 500 Club met at the home of Delores Mauer on Jan. 29.

Red velvet cake and coffee were served before playing.

Barbara Rauen won first place and Bitsy Ewan was second. Carol Westphal won the special prize.

The club will meet next on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Gayle Mauer.

Weaving initiative

All ages of people can participate in a community-wide weaving project happening now through March 19 at the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch, located at 221 Caroline St.

People can add to this ever evolving project using yarn and other textile materials any time the branch is open. People wanting more information on this community initiative can call the Athens library at 715-257-7292.

Senior Citizens

The Senior Citizens card group met on Feb. 6 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Three games of Sheepshead were played. Sally Whaples won the first game and Bitsy Ewan took second place. Butch Boris won the second game and Pat Frank placed second. Bernice Passehl won the third game and Jan Lake took second place. Wil Strack received low score.

The Senior Citizens card group will play cards again at 1 p.m. on this Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Continuing Ed

Stratford Continuing Education is offering Yoga Basics class from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, March 5 through May 14 in Athens.

Advance signup is required. People wanting more information and to sign up should visit www.stratfordclasses.com.

Play and Learn

Parents and their young children are welcome to attend Play and Learn at 10:30 a.m. each Tuesday until May 26 at the Marathon County Athens Branch Library.

Athens-area parents and their young children can attend Family Story Time at 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday until May 14 at the Marathon County Athens Branch Library.

Book Club

People are invited to stop at the Marathon County Branch Athens library at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, to discuss a contemporary fiction novel tittled, “Professor Chandra Follows His Bliss,” by author Rajeev Balasubramanyan.

Library craft event

All ages of people can use acrylic paints and metallic color pens to decorate a wooden heart with funky folk art designs until Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch. All supplies will be provided.
