A son, William Joseph, was born to Zach and Jackie Dalbec at 2:33 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2020, at Ascension St. Clare’s Hospital in Weston.

He was the first baby born in 2020 at St. Claire’s Hospital.

The baby boy was seven pounds, six ounces and 20.5 inches long.

He joins sisters Mary Lu, 8; Vanessa, 6; Amelia, 4 and a brother Charlie, 5.

Grandparents are Mark Schreiner and Al and Becky Belter, all of Athens, Mary Claire Vullings of Mosinee, and George and Trish Dalbec of Tomahawk.

Great-grandparents are Andy and Lolly Schreiner, and Dave and Sue Belter, all of Athens, and Gene and Jean Mercer of Mosinee.

Top students

The following are Athens Middle School Students of the Month in December of 2019: Riley Schultz-Becker, social studies; Sophia Coker, science; Vanessa Espinoza, English and Language Arts, and Mckayla Schreiner and Aleah Frahm, math.

The following are Athens High School Students of the Month in December of 2019: Olivia Schreiner, social studies; Annika Kulas, science; Madison Wagner-Durr, Mathew Redmann and Nancy Schreiner, English and Language Arts; and Parker Tischauser, Daryn Yessa and Cassandra Riehle, math.

New library hours

In order to better serve the public, the hours of operation of the nine Marathon County Public Library (MCPL) locations will change starting on Jan. 12.

The MCPL Board of Directors unanimously approved the new branch hours in October of 2019.

The following are the Stratford library’s new weekly hours of operation: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 1-7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and closed on Sunday.

Military supper

A Military Appreciation supper will be hosted by the Wien Wildcats 4-H from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9, at Edgar High School.

Current and former military service members and a guest are invited. People planning on attending the supper need to RSVP by Feb. 3 to 715-897-5354.

Trails meeting

The Athens Area Trails Association will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, in the Athens Fire Hall meeting room.

A preliminary meeting agenda includes planning the candlelight/ moonlight walk, winter grooming efforts, the new snowmobile purchase and 2020 projects.

Book Club

People can stop by the Mara- thon County Athens Branch Library at 6 p.m. this Thursday, Jan. 9, to discuss an autobiographical nonfiction book titled, “The Girl Who Smiled Beads” by author Clementine Wamariya.

Weekly knitting

Adults can practice their knitting, crocheting and more on a weekly basis with new sessions of Needle Arts afternoons from 1-4 p.m. each Tuesday until May 26 at the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch, located at 221 Caroline Street.

Family Story Time

Athens-area parents and their young children can attend Family Story Time at 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday from Jan. 15 until May 14 at the Marathon County Athens Branch Library.

Open House

The Poniatowski Dare Devils Snowmobile Club is having a 50th anniversary open house on Saturday, Feb. 8, from noon until 6 p.m. at the club’s shed, which is located at 126866 Cherry Grove Lane in rural Edgar.

There will be food and drinks available at the open house. The Poniatowski Dare Devils Snowmobile Club was established in 1970.

Pajama Story Time

Young children and their famkilies can hear relaxing stories, music and get ready for bedtime with a special Family Pajama Story Time from 6-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, at the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch, located at 221 Caroline St.

This event is free to the public, and anyone with questions can call the Athens library at 715-257-7292.

Weaving initiative

All ages of people can participate in a community-wide weaving project happening now through March 19 at the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch, located at 221 Caroline St.

People can add to this ever evolving project using yarn and other textile materials any timne the branch is open. People wanting more information on this community initiative can call the Athens library at 715-257-7292.

Play and Learn

Parents and their young children are welcome to attend Play and Learn at 10:30 a.m. each Tuesday from Jan. 14 through May 26 at the Marathon County Athens Branch Library.

Candlelight Walk

The Athens Area Trails Association will hold its sixth annual Candlelight/ Moonlight Walk from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Erbach Park, which is located at the north end of Wells Street in Athens.

Attendees can either walk, snowshoe or cross country ski approximately 2.5 miles of beautifully groomed candlelit trails in Erbach Park.

There is free admission and no registration is required for this event. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Attendees can warm up around a giant campfire.

Donations given during the event will aid in winter trail maintenance costs.

Senior Citizens

The Senior Citizens card group met on Jan. 2 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead were played. David Perrodin won the first game and Ceil Frank took second place. Jan Lake won the second game and Butch Boris placed second. Sally Whaples received low score.

The Senior Citizens card group will play cards again at 1 p.m. on this Thursday, Jan. 9, at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. The Senior Citizens card group welcomes any new members who want to play Sheepshead from 1-3:30 p.m. every Thursday.
