Loyal HS senior wins InvestWrite essay contest

Eddie Macias-Rivera, a recent graduate of Loyal High School who took the Finance and Investing class, has been named this year’s Wisconsin high school winner of the InvestWrite essay competition.
InvestWrite is a national writing competition provided by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) Foundation to qualifying teachers and students in grades four to 12 throughout the U.S. There is an elementary, middle school and high school winner for each state.
The writing contest is a way to enhance learning for students who are already participating in The Stock Market Game, a simulation in which students can buy and sell stocks, and compete against classmates to see who can achieve the greatest returns.
For his essay, Macias-Rivera had to answer the following prompt: “What are some benefits of working on a team versus on your own? Give examples from your Stock Market Game team or other examples of teamwork. Teaming up investments in a diversified portfolio also has benefits. If you could invest $10,000 now for a long-term goal, what team of investments, including stocks, bonds and/or mutual funds, would you choose and why?”
As congratulations for winning the contest, Macias-Rivera will receive a plaque, a $100 VISA gift card, and other goodies from the nonprofit EconomicsWisconsin.
This is the third year in a row Loyal has had a state winner. Olivia Piller won in 2021 and Kaden Olson won in 2022.
“An additional congratulations and sincere thank you goes to the family of Dr. Eldon Hill, the Eau Claire Community Foundation and the Loyal School District for making this opportunity possible for our students,” wrote Loyal School District K-12 financial literacy teacher Jessica Zarnke in a press release.
The Loyal School District’s financial literacy program is funded through the Draper Hills Financial Literacy Endowment, created by Hill and managed by the Eau Claire Community Foundation.
