The Personal Development Center (PDC) invites families to help make a difference by keeping individuals and families safe who are trying to escape or move beyond the violence which has affected their lives.

PDC is hosting “Kick Out Domestic Abuse Family Fun Day” at the Granton ballpark, 110 S. Main St., on May 20, starting at 10 a.m. The event will feature a kickball tournament, carnival games, food, bouncy houses, a dunk tank and more.

Proceeds will support PDC, a nonprofit victim services agency that for the last 50 years has provided case management, advocacy and prevention education to individuals and families in Clark County and northern Wood County. PDC offers advocacy and support services to youth and adult victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse; emergency housing in Marshfield for victims; school-based education and prevention programming; and visitation and exchange services.

PDC leaders are excited to host this upcoming event to shine a light on the work their organization does.

“It’s nice to get the families involved. We do education and prevention at the Clark County schools, but that’s the only time they hear of us,” said Tanya Johnson, PDC director of operations. “We want to bring awareness to what we do and let them know we’re here.”

The event will have a family feel, with the goal of providing a little something for everyone. The co-ed kickball tournament will be limited to the first 10 teams of 10 people to register. There is a player fee but cash prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place teams. Call 715-384-2971 to register. Kids will have a chance to enjoy car nival-style games, including sack races, face painting and tugof- war. A DJ will provide music and a variety of prize baskets will be raffled off. A picnic-style lunch will be available. “We’ve been thinking about doing a ‘family fun’ event for some time,” said Renee Schulz, PDC executive director. “The response has been really, really good so far.”

There are a variety of ways to get involved with the event. PDC is looking for volunteers to help with setup and/ or cleanup; supervise games, bouncy houses and the dunk tank; and prep, grill and serve food. The organization is also seeking volunteers willing to be dunked for a good cause. Donations are also being accepted, including donations of food, such as hamburgers, brats, hot dogs, buns, condiments, soda, bottled water, chips, popcorn and candy; raffle basket donations; carnival prizes; and gift cards/ certificates.

To donate or for more information, call 715-384-2971.

The event will be held rain or shine. “It’s going to be an opportunity to get Clark and Wood counties involved, and bring the communities together,” said Johnson. “Kids and parents will have fun things to do and we can bring that education piece as well, as we have so many services we can provide. It’s a really great opportunity to enjoy the day together.”
