I spent enough time last …. I spent enough time last ….

I spent enough time last week telling you how I just happened to start writing this column. So it is high time I get back to my list of things I want to share with you and hopefully get most of it in, but not before I write about the snow Mother Nature dumped on us Thursday morning. I knew it was going to be bad as the weatherman kept talking about it. I also knew from living so long I can recall other storms doing the same thing.

It seemed like it never was going to get here. As I said, the weather people on television kept talking about it for days. Then it apparently slowed down as it hadn’t arrived yet when I went to bed. I woke up at about 11 and everything seemed clear and normal. Then 15 minutes later I couldn’t see across Highway 29.

I also got to check something out Mark had asked about. He said down in the DeForest area, just north of Madison, snow removal equipment is marked with additional colored lights. Since my window faces out toward the highway just east of Exit 122, there were many chances to see the trucks all had their usual yellow flashers on.

Reading a couple of the other weekly newspapers I subscribe to, I found some interesting things. Not new stuff but old news. The Cumberland Advocate ran a story about Homer Anderson. The Legion Post there is named after him. I never knew why. Seems Homer was one of several men from Cumberland among the hundreds on board the SS Tuscania. They had set sail from New York on Jan. 24, 1918, and were on their 13th day of the voyage and nearing Scotland. Suddenly a torpedo tore through the ship. Two hundred men died, but there were survivors, with at least 10 from Cumberland, including Lester Boyden who had written to explain what happened. He survived but only with his overcoat, socks, shoes and his union suit.

The survivors were taken to England, where they stayed while they regrouped. He complained about no sugar, no milk and substitute coffee. Tobacco was sky high and eggs were 10 cents each. I thought I would mention that since I hear eggs have gone up in price.

ÓÓÓÓÓ I’m looking for Jackie and Bob to be home soon. It is apparent she will never be hired as a goodwill ambassador in Florida. Seems she sent home a picture on Facebook the other day with the word ”Florida” carefully scratched in the frost on the windshield of their car.

Iguesssomeof youknowDougZaleski. He is a Granton native who worked for the TRG for a few years. Then he moved on to Munice, Ind., where he also was the sports editor/reporter. Now he must be retired as his stuff on Facebook comes from just about any place in the country. The other day he had a gem I thought I’d share. Seems the Vikings hate the Packers so much they refused to let the players win the Lombardi Trophy.

Valorie mentioned seeing the movie about Otto. It must be good as I saw it advertised on television the other day. I mention this only because I had a good friend by the name Otto. We prided ourselves because we could spell our names backward as fast as we could forward.

Living right on Highway 29 I get to watch a lot of traffic. Sometimes I’d like to have a radar gun to just see how fast some of the traffic is moving. The speed limit is 65 yet there seems to be lots of passing going on. Are there speeders, or just some people driving slower while the others are driving the limit? I don’t suppose I’ll ever find out unless I can find a radar gun.

There is another question that comes up just about every day. Log trucks are going by from west to east and from east to west. Is there a difference in the saw mills they are going to? Seems like a waste of fuel for those going one way or another.

Don’t get me wrong. I love it — all kinds of cars, trucks, buses or you name it. You just wonder sometimes where everyone is going. Otherwise, all I can see is snow. Lots of it and it seems to have been there forever. And this is still January.

That is probably why I thought of this question the other day and can’t make up my mind. If a man by the name Judge walks into a room, does everyone say, “Here comes the judge!”?
