I fully intended to tell …. I fully intended to tell ….

I fully intended to tell you another chapter in how I got started writing a column. But a few things kind of got into the way. Maybe I’ll get to it yet. For one thing it was the shorthand class. It wasn’t that I was a good student in shorthand; it was because I was a good student in class. You might say it happened because there was a war on, or it had just ended when I started high school. Teachers were in short supply, especially male teachers. Only our principal and ag teacher were men and probably only because they were past the draft age limits.

A lady by the name of Miss Huey taught commercial classes. I did well in typing because I liked it and thought it would be useful. The manual typewriters we had in class had the keys covered. So you learned the touch system, or you failed. I still can’t tell you where the keys are, but can sit down and just type away.

Another thing was the choice of classes. Boys took ag and girls took home ec. If not, there was a problem finding a class to take in your senior year. That’s how I ended up in shorthand class. It must have been the fill-in class for others too, as I had several boy classmates. They never had any intention of learning as they spent their hour in class being cutups.

I guessed Miss Huey was about 90, probably closer to at least 70. Where I sat, I was the last to leave the room. On the way out I always said, “Good afternoon, Miss Huey.” I think that earned me an A that period.

I have to mention the ad in last week’s TRG. Cuddie Funeral Home, Gesche Funeral Home and Maurina-Schilling Funeral Homes paid tribute to longtime Coroner Richard Scheifer. It is remarkable we have people like Richard and Bob Lulloff before him. It has to be a job you don’t sit at the dinner table and talk about.

Then there is the story about the football player. I guess I was a minority on that one. Sure, it sounded serious, but football is a pretty serious topic. Green Bay didn’t get to be called “Titletown” by the players being nice guys.

Do you think people care if they might see someone get hurt? Apparently not by the stories I hear of people waiting for their chance to get a season ticket.

How did that slip by? All the “-ber” months came and are gone for another season. That’s October, November and December. And we are well into the “-uary” months, January and February. Add a few days in March, which can produce lots of snow. All that adds up to spring is coming and I’m ready. It’s just such a nuisance to go out and clean all the snow off the car.

If the snow wasn’t bad enough, add some rain and you’ve got nothing but ice. I noticed it right away when heading down to see Shelly a week ago. Naturally I stuck to the main highways, which were clear. As I neared Christie I noticed a car crosswise in the road. Then it backed up. All of a sudden it took off across the highway and up the incline into his yard. He made it.

I got a chuckle reading Valorie’s story about her fingernail problem. Seems I’ve been having a nail problem too. A thumb nail problem. It seems one of them split. Not bad, just enough to catch on something. Do you realize how often you use your thumbs for something? Like a sore finger, not until you try doing something.

I didn’t fix it with any fancy polish or nail remover. Just an old fashioned piece of adhesive tape. Being the good conservative I am, I got four patches per Band-Aid.

They fell off pretty often, especially when I tried washing my hands. Thankfully I can say I never lost one in my soup.

I started this column a while ago. Let’s just say last year. I can’t send it in without mentioning the frosty mornings the last couple of days. I think all the strange noises I’ve been hearing are the camera shutters as people take pictures of our beautiful winter wonderland.
