Loyal girls hold off Stanley-Boyd for win over winter break

The Loyal girls basketball team continued on their winning streak by overcoming Stanley-Boyd while at home over the holiday break. The Greyhounds had a strong push in the first half to push ahead of the Orioles and held even with them in the second half to stave off a comeback for the win.

Gameplay in the first half started slow for Loyal, as the first points scored in the game were a pair of successful free throws for Stanley-Boyd. But like a steam engine building up power, the Greyhounds broke free of close early scoring and never looked back. From the 14:16 mark – when the score was 10-9 in Loyal’s favor – until the end of the first half, Loyal scored 30 points to the Orioles’ 12. Six of those points came from 3-pointers and three additional points in the first half were gained by free throws.

Loyal started off strong in the second half, but scoring by the Greyhounds dropped in comparison to the first half, even as Stanley-Boyd gained ground. The Greyhounds scored 33 points to Stanley-Boyd’s 32 in the last 18 minutes to keep pace with the opposition and secure their 73-53 win. In the second half, Loyal was seven-for-11 on free throw shots and had two 3-pointers scored by Sheila Tellock.

At the Dec. 27 game, the Greyhounds had a 54.7 percent shot completion rate to Stanley-Boyd’s 34.7 percent. On an individual level, the Greyhounds’ top scorers included Alyssia Zvolena, who scored 22 total points, including going three-for-three on free throws and sinking a 3-pointer. Sheila Tellock contributed 19 points, going two-for-two on free throws and sinking three 3-pointers, and Addysen Wolf added 10 points.
