Twice this month when I ….

Twice this month when I …. Twice this month when I ….

Twice this month when I typed in the date I was suddenly met with a lot of memories. The first of course was Dec. 7. The next would be Dec. 21. The thought ran through my mind that it would be the last chance to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

Never in my wildest dream would I be reading about the last of The Born Lesar. I remember so well when it all began. I had just hired a young man to cover sports. Mary Ann Lesar who has worked faithfully in our ad department for so many years came to me and said she didn’t know if I was hiring as maybe I would have considered hiring Dean.

She suggested bringing me a sample of his writing. It was a story Dean had written about his dad and how he had found him one morning sitting in a chair. He was dead.

I decided right then and there to hire him, but it took some doing. Our payroll was at the limit, but we found some federal program that could assist with the payroll.

Things were rolling along pretty well and in addition Scott Schultz was then our editor. Things were going so well I even decided to run for county board chairman.

I wasn’t expecting to find a note on my desk one morning from Scott telling me he was resigning for another job, but he assured me Dean was ready to take on the responsibility.

I never knew all the things entitled with covering all the sports and other things. When we first bought the paper Mrs. Butterbrodt saw to it that school events were covered. I do recall one time it was a bit shocking to see we carried a story about a fifth grade football game.

But now it is on to better things. I was overjoyed to see Valorie Brecht has joined the staff. I have read a number of her articles in The Clark County Press and have always been impressed.

I guess the other big thing to write about is the snow. Sure glad I didn’t have to go out in it. They say that is why it is called Winter Wonderland.

You wonder what is coming next.

I almost forgot to mention being in Loyal on Tuesday before all this hit. I was certainly impressed with the Chamber of Commerce display.

A bit short this week, but must make the news deadline. Just want to close by wishing you a very Merry Christmas and the Lord’s blessing to all.
