One runner from the Loyal-Greenwood cross country team will be competing at the WIAA State Cross Country Championship on Oct.29 at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. Connor Genteman was the fourth runner to finish at the Division 3 Sectional held in Cadott on Oct. 22, being the second individual to qualify for a spot at the state meet.

Genteman competed in a 123-runner field at the Whispering Pines Golf Course, running one of his best times of the season to earn his first trip to state. The junior ran a 17:46.7 to qualify, taking the second individual spot and placing fourth overall. He will be joined at state by team qualifiers JJ Williams of Glenwood City (1st, 16:33.1) and Paul Pfeifer of McDonell Central (2nd, 17:08.3) and by individual qualifiers Peter Weir of Cadott (3rd, 17:13.9), Micah Fossum of Immanuel Lutheran (5th, 17:47.8), Owen Hamholm of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser (6th, 17:53.9) and Elijah Poppe of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser (7th, 17:56.0).

The Greyhound girls did not have anyone qualify for the state meet, but freshman Summer Smith came the closest. She ran a 22:12.7 and took 16th, just six places shy and about 40 seconds slower than Jenna Anders of Fall Creek, who took the last individual spot with her time of 21:35.1.

In the girls race, Loyal-Greenwood took seventh place with 180 points. Colfax took second with 100 points and will be going to state to compete along with Eau Claire Regis, which won the girls race with 63 points.
