Rocket runners compete at Athens meet

The Spencer cross country team competed at Athens on Sept. 29, with the times from the team’s runners holding steady as they approach the end of the season. The athletes at the invite competed against a large field of runners, finishing individually in the second half of finishers.

Three runners competed for the Spencer girls. In the 119-runner field, Rachel Nieman placed 62nd overall with her time of 24:30.6. Zaprina Bulla Ruiz took 90th, running a 26:30.8, and Kaydence Plaskey ran a 27:50.2 to place 102nd.

The Rocket boys had five runners compete and place at the Athens meet, competing as a team at the invite. Malachai Anderson was the first Rocket to cross the finish, taking 71st out of 138 runners with a time of 20:54.2. Breckin Miller came next, finishing in 92nd with a time of 21:42.9. About 10 seconds later, Isaac Howlett (21:51.3) finished in 95th place. Also running for the boys were Andrew Sieracki (121st, 24:02.7) and Henry Glamm (136th, 27:08.0).

The Spencer boys took 14th overall with 398 points. Other teams competing at Athens were Thorp (333), Cadott (300), Columbus Catholic (288), Assumption (263), Stanley-Boyd (235), Rib Lake/Prentice (187), Colby-Abbotsford (181), Marathon (139), Auburndale (138), Tomahawk (127), Chequamegon (107), Athens (79), and Phillips (44). Antigo, Gresham-Bowler, Laona/Wabeno, and Three Lakes all fielded incomplete boys teams.

The Spencer girls, along with Auburndale, Columbus Catholic, Laona/Wabeno, Rib Lake/Prentice, Stanley-Boyd and Three Lakes, did not field complete girls teams. Teams placing at the Athens meet were Abbotsford (262), Athens (244), Antigo (234), Thorp (233), Cadott (161), Marathon (155), Chequamegon (139), Colby (106), Tomahawk (97), Phillips (82) and Assumption (51).
