it gets interesting in sixth grade

Sixth grade will investigate many interesting topics within the curriculum this year.

In Language Arts, sixth-graders are reading fiction and nonfiction works that focus around the theme of Turning Points. They will explore how life-changing events cause characters and people to adapt to unexpected circumstances. Students also began the year with a study of prepositions and have been increasing writing stamina by responding to daily prompts. ~Mrs. Weisenberger This fall in sixth-grade science we will be learning about the human microbiome and metabolism as well as natural selection and the history of evolution. Students will experience science through the perspective of a research student and complete hands-on labs and projects.

In social studies, the students will practice using a variety of map tools while learning about the people and places around the world. In addition, sixth-grade students are part of an enriched agriculture science class that will expand and supplement knowledge of the agriculture industry and communities. ~Ms. Reif In math, sixth graders have been developing their geometry skills by decomposing and rearranging triangles and squares. Rearranging those shapes led to a solid foundation for finding the areas of parallelograms, trapezoids, and other composite shapes. Once we conclude area/2D shapes, we will move into volume/3D shapes. We’ve also completed numerous team-building activities to build trust among peers in the classroom! Our classroom is a place where mistakes are accepted and celebrated as learning opportunities. I look forward to seeing the growth in our sixth-graders this year and beyond. ~Mrs. Wilke
