Take a couple days off …. Take a couple days off ….

Take a couple days off and things really can get bunched up. Of course with the Memorial Day weekend lots of things are bound to happen.

Monday morning there were threats of rain, but about all it amounted to was a shower north of Withee early in the morning.

It is always so great to hear the story of the old G.A.R. flag told every year. This was the l04th year and no one ever seems to challenge our claim to being the only community that has such an observance. It amazes me how Channel 13 doesn’t seem to think much about it but the motorcycles a few miles away at The Highground catch the attention of their cameras.

While the program is always great, seeing so many people I haven’t seen for awhile is so much fun. Especially when I see a few new beards appearing. Bob Meyer explained it has been impossible to grow hair on the top of his head, so he thought he would try his chin.

I don’t know about the other gentleman, but Tom sure does look a bit more dignified than before, if that is possible.

It kind of reminds me of the year of our centennial. I was sure I was in the running for the prize for trying the hardest. Then they gave it to some guy who hadn’t shaved that morning.

I have kept my mustache and for some reason it turned gray, just like my hair. I probably don’t have much, but it is sure more than a couple of my brothers who turned bald. My Dad kept all of his hair and discovered a way to keep his sideburns trimmed. He just ran above his ears with his electric razor, which did take a little more than what a barber might.

I call it the fastest hour of the week. That is the hour every Friday afternoon when we have music in the main dining room. I wrote about Red Higgens of Medford being there one week. He is always kind of extra special.

A few weeks ago a man by the name of Dick Hinke who claims to be from the Jim Falls area was our singer/accordian player. He plays the accordion and sings lots of old songs, but also a few he made up. One like the shaving cream song which every verse ends with something like, “and then he stepped in a bucket of…SHAVING CREAM”.

Then he has one called the John Deere song and he even wears a John Deere cap when he sings it. There is one verse when he tells about driving his John Deere down the Owen Hill, but always wonders where that is.

It brought back memories of one day when I was at the courthouse picking up the court news for the TRG. I had a few minutes to spare so I thought I’d just pop into one of the court rooms and see what was happening. Seems it was just people pleading their own cases before Judge Brennan.

One case had just been settled and the next one was about to begin. The man was objecting to the ticket he got for passing on a hill written by the Owen Chief of Police. All of a sudden Judge Brennan rapped the gavel and announced the trial couldn’t continue. He explained there was a man from the news media in the courtroom and as everyone knows, there is no hill in Owen.

Well, I did check it out the other day and have to agree. There is no hill, but quite a bit of Highway X between Owen and Withee is marked with a yellow line on one side of the road or the other. I guess the only explanation I could see was the chief should have marked the ticket for passing on a yellow line instead of a hill.

Wednesday I was in Loyal to get a tire fixed at Domine Auto Center. I picked up a copy of the TRG to read while I was waiting. My first glance at the front page had my eyes fixed for a few minutes before I could turn the page. Right there “smack dab” was a picture of my great granddaughter Avery Rueth. I know she was special, but to make the front page – WOW!

When I did get done looking I leafed through the pages and settled on reading “The Born Lesar”. I thought it was hilarious. It almost seems like the instructions were written to show how stupid someone could be to even require the need for instructions.

Just an update on Shelly. I think I told you she had been sent here to the Clark County Rehab and Living Center after falling at the group home, “ Just Like Home” where she has been living for the past 12 or so years in Colby.

It would have really worked out good, except she was bound and determined she could just move in with me.

I wasn’t able to get over into the main building where the west side has now been completely remodeled. Workers are now working on the east side. I’m assuming that’s where I will eventually end up and it is something to look forward to. Meanwhile I’ll just do the best I can in what I call the “Penthouse - Room 122” in the Rehab Center.

And this is sort of related. The 100th anniversary of the facilities came on July 1st and I’m told a formal celebration is planned for Sept. 17 with some events occurring all week long.

Should be a fun week and a lot of memories keep coming back of when I was on the County Board and ADS and the Health Care Center were both under committees I served on. It is kind of like looking at something from a different angle. But it all comes down to providing a place for people to live who can’t or don’t have anyone to care for them.
