Mental health funding important to support farmers, students

Rep. Donna Rozar

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness of mental illness and provide support for those struggling with a mental health condition. As a former clinical nurse and nurse educator, I understand and have first-hand knowledge the adverse effects stress and mental illness can have on an individual’s health. This month is a time to celebrate the important investments our state has made to ensure mental health care is accessible to Wisconsinites with mental health symptoms. Our investments targeted support for populations who have seen an uptick in mental health conditions, such as farmers and our youth.

Many farmers have reported rising stress in their careers; Republicans have responded by funding the Farmer Wellness Program that supports counseling for immediate and long-term mental health needs, encourages peer-support, and offers business resources and training to farmers. This program highlights the importance of helping farmers navigate financial challenges, access healthcare, and improve work-life balance. Our investments in this program are designed to provide farmers with the resources they need to thrive.

Mental health conditions are also on the rise among students, which is why we made substantial investments in mental health services for our students. School closures and isolation have accelerated the increase in anxiety and depression our youth are experiencing. Republicans doubled the funding for the mental health categorical aids in our K12 schools, which provide social work services directly to students at school. I firmly believe investing in mental health services for our youth is a worthy use of taxpayer dollars.

Additionally, seven million dollars were invested for mental health collaboration grants, bringing schools and community organizations together to provide mental health services to students. Previous grants in this program have helped hundreds of schools arrange services for students throughout the state. Now more than ever, our kids are in need of the critical services being facilitated through these sources of funding. The growth of mental health conditions go beyond these two populations, and our budget reflected as much through the addition of nearly $24 million in mental health spending over the biennium, including increased reimbursement rates to healthcare providers. These funds ensure all Wisconsinites can access critical mental health care.

While May is specifically dedicated to raising awareness and supporting those with mental health conditions, Republicans in Wisconsin are committed to ensuring those who are struggling receive the support they need year-round to enjoy life to their fullest potential.
