I found the truth. The …. I found the truth. The ….

I found the truth. The snow season is over. Now we move on to road construction. I was driving around Sunday afternoon and as I drove north from Greenwood there was this sign on the road. So I just had to check it out. Sure enough a bridge is being replaced or rebuilt on Highway 73 and traffic is limited to one lane. A stop and go signal helps you get through.

The change of seasons pulled another fast one on me. I was watching basketball and they kept talking about the final four. I thought, gee that’s next month. Nothing to get excited about. Well, what do you know. We are all done with basketball and The Masters will be upon us this weekend. First thing you know it will be deer season.

And speaking of deer, my little side trip to check out the road construction took me over to Owen Avenue and as I headed south, seven deer ran across the road in front of me. It was just seconds later four more made me think I was lucky to not be driving fast or I might have had some fresh venison hanging from my front bumper.

I ran across this little item the other day right after the fighting broke out in Ukraine. War is something young people who don’t hate each other and don’t know each other kill each other. That decision is made by old people who know each other and hate each other but let the young people do the killing. I guess that pretty well sums up what wars are all about.

The magazine, Our Wisconsin, came in the mail the other day. If there is anything to cheer a person up, that magazine is it. I think there are others who get it and I am wondering how they treat it? Do you just let it lay and read it as you get time? Or maybe you do like I do. First I look at all the pictures and then to the stories to see what they are about.

One of the regular features is written by an Amish family who live near Cecil, just east of Shawano. They don’t seem to be bothered by not having an automobile and it was interesting, a few issues ago, he mentioned being to Loyal to attend an auction on Highway 98.

While I published a newspaper for lots of years I often wonder how they go about planning for each issue. The issue that came the other day is called the April/May issue and loaded with spring pictures. That must mean they plan a whole year ahead. However they do it, it is a wonderful magazine to have around the house.

Talk about startled. That was the thought I had the other day when a letter came in the mail. It was from the Turtle Lake Community Scholarship Fund announcing another drive to raise money for graduating seniors. It will be the 57th year. Holy smokes, I started the scholarship fund and it just keeps going.

It all started in a rather unusual way. A group of citizens were upset with one of the teachers. They made a fuss, then got on the agenda for a school board meeting. By the time of the meeting they had settled down and their only request was to start a Parent Teacher Association. (PTA) That was fine and I thought it might be good for the community. Not so. The organization got started, but there were actually three different groups in town. Those who were upset in the first place, those who supported the teacher and then, some like me that thought a PTA might be a good thing.

Well, believe me it didn’t work out, but for another reason. At one of the meetings, which actually was the time to elect or reelect officers, no one would offer to be the president. I just happened to be the president at the time and when no one would volunteer I suggested we just drop it. I had discovered on the night of our meeting three or four other groups were also meeting. So I suggested we just drop it, but there was a problem. We had a little money in our treasury we had raised in a fund drive. Instead of just letting it go I suggested a scholarship fund.

Well, lo and behold it caught on. The first year we gave out three, $300 scholarships. Our newspaper, the Turtle

Lake Times, helped us out.

When we announced another year of the scholarships, they printed the names of everyone that gave. Over the years that list gets pretty long as last year they gave a scholarship to anyone that applied and the year before 22 were awarded. Not bad for a little money left over from a Pancake Supper.

Oh, the teacher the group wanted to fire. He stayed around a couple of years and took a teacher job at Stanley-Boyd. From there he moved on to the UW-Stout.
