Hopefully I got this right. …. Hopefully I got this right. ….

Hopefully I got this right. It’s Dec. 30th and the 53rd issue this year. Maybe that is a sum of all the things that happened this year. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for the new year. So with that I’ll get started on the right track. Happy New Year! Since it is a short week one would think not much happened. But that wasn’t the case. It all started last Wednesday when I went after my TRG. Wednesdays are always a little different. I don’t go get the mail until The Price Is Right is over. That way I can make a stop at the post office, get my mail and then swing across the street to pick up my paper. I always like the idea of getting my paper right off the press. For the last few weeks there had been a tiny note on the door about wearing your mask. I noticed it was a new sign and figured maybe they just did it a bit neater. Holy smokes. The sign simply said, closed, Covid 19. I thought how can that be. They are supposed to be reporting the news, not making it. It was the next day before I found out that it was Dean and will be waiting for his firsthand account of the virus.

A number of years ago, Jackie had given me a walking stick she said she bought in the Ozarks. It has a face carving on one end and was pretty neat when I went walking. Then came the time when I needed to depend on it for my balance problem. It sure came in handy, but was especially awkward if I was going inside someplace. Like to church. So while she and Bob were in Florida she was always telling me they had been out checking garage sales as an excuse for not answering my e-mail. So I suggested she buy me a cane. Well, the cane came, but it wasn’t a garage sale variety, but a brand new HurryCane you see advertised on television. I call it Alfred, just so it had a name and it sure has come in handy. Then one day last week I had made a quick dash to Marshfield and my last stop was at Walmart. I used Alfred to get into the store, then tucked him in my shopping cart. When I came out, I quickly loaded my bags of goodies in the car, pushed the cart to it’s storage place and headed home, pleased that I had found everything I wanted so quickly. In the afternoon, I was going to run into Kwik Trip for something and when I reached for Alfred he wasn’t there. It didn’t take but a second to realize what I had done, but how was I going to get him back? Luckily my next stop was to run out to see Jackie and I told her my sad story. Just like Wonder Girl she was on the phone to Walmart and in a few seconds learned that Alfred was safe in their lost and found department. Miracles do happen.

I don’t get many phones calls. Sue will call every afternoon, but always ahead of when she knows I’m going to be watching Jeopardy and then it is the news and Wheel of Fortune right after that, so she has to work it in. Later Mark will call and otherwise it is some telemarketer trying to sell me something. They always want to help me with my credit card debt, but when I ask how to get there in the first place, they hang up. So the other night a call came in at an odd time and it happened to be our friends Fred and Gail Geiger who live in Holland, Michigan. We got to know them when we were going to Texas and they just grew into great friends. They are a unique couple as both have handicaps, but you would never know it by the places they go and things they do. We used to have a standing appointment every Thursday night when we played cards together. One year we drove over to see them and I just had to buy some Holland tulip bulbs, so it is kind of a joke when they call to see how the tulips are doing.

Even in all the tough times we have been through this year there always seems to be someone who can come up with a clever joke. The other day on Facebook there was this picture of what looked like ground meat. The first person said, “Oh, it is safe, it came from a plant.” The second person was interested and asked what kind of a plant? The first person said, “A meat plant”. Well, I thought it was funny.

We end the year with the news still filled with our president upset and threatening to do some terrible things. I can’t understand it. He lost by seven million votes. How does he think he can overcome that many? I guess he told us if he lost it would be a fake and he just wants to show us he is right. With that I’ll just wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope that 2021 will be fun.
