Greenwood, Loyal girls hoops teams pick up Monday wins

The Greenwood girls basketball team squeaked out a win over Spencer on Monday evening for its first win of the young season, while Loyal had no trouble whatsoever in dispatching Owen-Withee to stay unbeaten through four starts.

Greenwood topped the Rockets 38-36 at home as Olivia Klabon scored a team-high 11 points, Mesa Rasmussen had nine and Celine Wuethrich added eight. Madison Knecht scored 10 points for Spencer and Heavyn Kind had eight.

The game was only the second so far this year for the Indians, which had to reschedule games due to school being closed for two weeks for COVID-19. In its first game of the season on Dec. 11, Greenwood fell 67-24 to Neillsville, with Rasmussen scoring 11 points in the losing effort.

Greenwood will be in action on Dec. 17 at home against Owen-Withee. It heads to Colby on Dec. 22.

Also on Monday night, the Loyal girls rolled 69-9 over Owen Withee in an Eastern Cloverbelt Conference contest played on the Greyhounds’ home court. Loyal got a lot of close shots on the night and ended up making half of their 60 field-goal attempts. The Greyhounds scored 28 points in a row at one point in the first half and led 42-5 at the break.

Savannah Schley scored 15 points to lead Loyal. Kayla Bremmer put up 14 points, Katlyn Lindner added 10 and Abrial Kubista scored eight.

Owen-Withee managed just 21 shots on the night, and converted four.

Loyal was 3-13 on the night on 3-point attempts and 6-8 at the free-throw line.

Loyal is now 4-0 on the season with the early ECC victories over Spencer, Marshfield Columbus and Owen-Withee. The Greyhounds also picked up a 51-35 nonconference win at home against Edgar on Dec. 11.

Loyal had to work for this one and led only 24-17 at the half. The Greyhounds opened the second half with a 15-point scoring streak that put them ahead 39-17 with13:14 left in the game.

Loyal shot 49 percent from the floor as a team, hitting 19 of 39 shots. The Hounds were 5-14 on 3-pointers and 8-12 at the line.

Lindner had a 14-point night and drained four shots from 3-point range. Schley added 10 points and Bremmer contributed eight.

Loyal’s next action is a Dec. 17 ECC game at Gilman. It then hosts Spencer on Dec. 22.
