Michael V. Smith of Loyal has announced his candidacy as a Republican for the 69th District State Assembly seat now held by Bob Kulp of Stratford. Kulp announced earlier this year that he is not seeking re-election, and a new representative will be selected by voters on Nov. 3.

Smith and his wife, Jeannie, have lived in Loyal for the past 10 years, operating several small businesses including Grandma’s Kitchen and Motel in Loyal, Town and Country Acres Mobile Home park, Hill Top Bar and Grill, Destiny Trucking, Destiny Farms, and Mad Hatters Pyro-Technics LLC.They also own several rental properties throughout Wisconsin.

Smith worked for Mitchel Metal Products Company for 12 years as plant manager, managing more than 100 employees in the fabrication and wire divisions before retiring in 2018. Before moving to Loyal, Smith and his family lived in Rock County, where Smith worked in the Circuit Court Branch VII and served as a municipal judge. He currently serves as a volunteer EMT/firefighter in Loyal and provides back-up first responder coverage to Greenwood.

If elected as the next 69th District Assembly representative, Smith said he “is committed to utilizing that experience in education in areas of business, agriculture, emergency medical, judiciary law, law enforcement, correctional, transportation, small and large business, working towards the development to better fund our schools and the economic growth to our communities.”

The 69th Assembly District includes parts of Clark, Marathon and Wood counties, including the cities of Loyal, Neillsville, Colby, Abbotsford and part of Marshfield and the villages of Spencer, Granton and Stratford.Candidates who wish to have their names on fall ballots have until early June to submit proper paperwork. If more than one candidate from either the Republican or Democratic party files by the deadline, a primary election will be held on Aug. 18 to narrow the field for the Nov. 3 general election. Other candidates who have filed initial campaign registration statements since Kulp’s announcement but not completed the full candidacy process (according to the Wisconsin Elections Commission candidate tracking website) are Republicans Tim Miller of Stratford, Donna Rozar of Marshfield, and Matthew Windheuser of Marshfield, and Democrat Brian Giles of Marshfield.
