I’m not like most people

As I stare out my picture window, the sun and sunlight are just making their way over the horizon so the color of the sky is a bit orange and deep pink (it reminds me of a mixed sherbet). From the little slivers I see through fencing and tree lines, it is stunning. I contemplate over what is most whimsical or interesting to tell you but nothing is coming to mind. Maybe being lost in the moment of dawn in front of me is too beautiful and is enveloping me in her embrace. To be held by the sunrise just for moments, getting lost in the present moment and just being. Witnessing.
Has life been pulling you this way and that way? Around and around again, like a disco ball without a beat? If you read my last column and are generally a person who allows themselves to notice the small things in life, you may see that most of us are trying to ‘hold it all together.’ Why?
Why is it wrong to slow down or even stop to witness some type of beauty that this planet has to offer. Or even the smallest of action of one’s self doing a simple task. It’s far better than filling one’s mind with the chaos of everything going on. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to be informed but have we created a balance in our lives, or are we lopsided? Containing only the ‘chaos’ of everyday human life… deadlines, road construction, meetings… fill the list as necessary.
When was the last time you, as an adult, laid down in your yard to look at the sky or clouds? Or to look upon the trees in your yard, to really inspect them and all their intricate groves and edges of it’s bark and leaves? Have you ever looked down at your feet and found an ant searching for a way around the massive thing (your foot) that just stepped into it’s path to wherever it’s going? This one might be a little more of everyone’s speed. How about sitting - maybe at a kitchen table or couch - with a nice fresh cup of coffee or tea and looking out upon the changing leaves? I think I may have gotten a bit more of you. Good. Now in those moments, do you allow yourself to not think about what dinner should be that night (if you have any ideas let me know) or do you allow yourself to be transfixed by the differences of colors throughout the tree and trees surrounding it? Do you allow yourself to be present within that moment of time?
Time is a fickle thing. I know, in fact, it is not fickle but fixed (in this ‘timeline’); however, we developed time as a way to chart the days. Now all that ‘time’ is being filled with ‘what are all the things I can get done in the small amount of it that we have.’ I suppose that is not how I want to live. Beating some clock that’s man-made, but to live in a ‘time’ where it’s filled with not just beautiful moments, but beautiful days and witnessing the smaller minute details others look over.
