Mantra vibes… Om

Mantra vibes… Om Mantra vibes… Om

Vibrations are a magical thing. In passing someone might just agree to keep the conversation going, but what if we took a hot minute to really think about vibrations and how truly extraordinary they are. Vibrations literally make everything in the universe and beyond work. The universe is in a constant state of motion in the most miniscule of ways. Even things that we perceive as to be solid truly aren’t solid because atoms and molecules are vibrating so darn close to each other that we think and feel them to be solid.

One of my most favorite quotes is, “And did you know that when you really get close; nothing really touches, bro, just kind of floats?”, by Ryan Guldemond. He wrote the song “Infinitesimal” performed by Mother Mother. One of my favorite guilty pleasure songs. If you look into the lyrics you could see why.

When we sing we are making vibrations by our vocal cords rubbing together and making sound. And what is sound? At the very base it is vibrations varying in a rate of which speed and pressure are at the right frequency level that our human ears pick up on... how cool, right! If you want to take it another step further, one could say that sound is all around us, if in fact sound is just vibrations in a fequency that we can humanly hear.

So, if sound produced by humans (singing, talking, chanting, humming) is vibration, then would repeating a certain sound wave over and over again possibly correct an out of alignment vibration making us feel better? It makes me think, that must be why the ancient Sanskrit mantras work so well.

Let me explain how I got to that assumption so quickly. To you it may have seemed that was my next thought; however, my mind brought to me a beautiful example of how to explain it. Simple... mantras.

What is a mantra? Looking at the root translation of the word, manas (mind) and tras (tool) - from Sanskirt, “tool for the mind”.

If looking at the evidence that was brought before and believing all of that to be true then the work of chanting or repeating a string of words, or even a singular word, could bring you back into alignment with the right vibrations for you.

Many people use mantras when meditating or even in their everyday life, as a means to keep true to their inner being and soul. One of the most well known mantra is Om, (pronounced Aum). It is considered to be the sound of creation, containing every vibration that has ever existed - or will exist in the future. Pretty incredible right?

If you are intrigued and would like to know more, stay tuned. Maybe my next column will go into more depth about mantras, where exactly they came from and how powerful the simple act of meditating with one could change your outlook on life.
