Crazy cats Crazy cats

I was never a cat person. I grew up with a dog who stayed outdoors a majority of the time. We had cats that roamed around and came and went as they pleased. I remember not being too terribly fond of the cats we did have.

They usually didn’t like to be petted and were only around half the time. Then, they’d disappear and never come back. I convinced myself they found cooler kids to hang out with and ended up making a home somewhere else. But who knows where they ended up. This feeling of abandonment on the cats’ part probably made me naturally more of a dog person.

When Kailtyn and I started dating, I was introduced to Penelope the cat. One of my first memories of Penelope was Kaitlyn’s mom Kris, putting her in my arms as I tried to shy away from holding her. She was cute and fluffy and all but I hadn’t really had a reason to hold a cat before.

Then, when we moved into our house in Marshfield, Penelope came with us. She quickly became my favorite fluffy friend as I was working from home and she followed me around.

Then, about a year later, Kaitlyn showed me a picture of a cute kitten that was currently in a local animal shelter. His name was Kevin and he looked very similar to Penelope. She asked if we could adopt him and I thought we had such a good experience with Penelope that another one would be double the fun. It turned out double the fun was the theme of the whole trip to the shelter. We ended up bringing home both Kevin and his sister, Winnifred.

It was an adjustment for Penelope as she dished out her fair share of hisses and “love bites” as we like to call them to the other two cats. Now, she acts like the kittens’ mother as Winnie likes to curl up with Penelope when they sleep.

That was about a year and a half ago and those two are still as wild as ever chasing each other up and down the halls and putting on their best parkour performances off our furniture. While I write this from my couch, Kevin is asleep on my arms and Penelope is asleep in between my legs.

The coziness and cuddling isn’t even the coolest thing about being a cat owner. Both my brother and his fiance are allergic to cats so it acts as a natural brother repellent. Just kidding, Andy and Haylee! The cool thing is that the cats always think you’re talking to them in a manner that is endearing. I can say anything to them and they will just sit there and act as if everything is normal. I call Penelope chonk or gigantor because she’s pushing 20 pounds.

It’s something that might be considered bullying if you said it to a human. But to a cat, it’s business as usual.

I think I’d still like a dog someday but I think I’m turning from a dog person to a cat person.
