Worst storm of the winter

The worst storm of the winter struck this area Wednesday and continued throughout the night, so that snow plows gave up trying to keep the highways open after midnight.

Most of the rural schools and high schools that have students coming in on buses were closed Tuesday. The Abbotsford grade school was in session and attendance was normal.

Snow plows had opened the village streets in an early hour and crews continued the clearing away of snow during the day.

Temperatures had fallen and a sharp east wind changed to a sharper west wind and blew snow back into the plowed roads.

City approves bonding for expansion at AMPI

An initial resolution tentatively endorsing a plan to sell $2.5 million in industrial revenue bonds for expansion at AMPI’s Abbotsford plant was approved by the Abbotsford City Council in regular session Monday evening at city hall.

The idea submitted to the city includes a 2,300 foot expansion on the north-east end of the AMPI plant at an estimated cost of $600,000; equipment in the amount of $1,700,0000; and $200,000 in bonding and engineering fees. John St. Peter, Fond du Lac, an AMPI representative, told the council that the initial estimates were here high, and the actual final cost could be lower. He told the council that the city was not obligated by issuance of the bonds, which must be repaid by AMPI, but that issuing a municipal bond allowed industry to get a better interest rate.

The council also discussed other areas of possible industrial development which might include a TIF district, which the city now has under consideration.

Roger Weideman of rural Abbotsford discussed with the council possible annexation to the city and questioned continued farming of the land, or a return to farming if the land wasn’t used as a farm for a period of time. The council told Weideman that as long as the land was zone agriculture, that there should be no problem.
